Public schools reopen with 72 elementary and 4 high schools resuming amid strikes. Over 45 000 pupils expected. East Side High opens with 1 200 students and a 60-teacher corps. New classes include jewelry and pottery to develop student talents.
The Education Act boosted salaries for elementary and kindergarten teachers, prompting more to pursue teaching. A.B. graduates will begin as part time instructors at 450 while completing studies toward diplomas. A cooperative plan pairs students with experienced supervisors. Home economies work seeks to place students in a live-in learning environment, with a West Side High School class planned once rooms are ready.

Mrs. Ade laide F. Timmons, daughter of the late Charles Warren Fairbanks, files in Indianapolis Probate Court to set aside her father’s will claiming unsound mind and undue influence. Defendants include brothers Richard Warren and Frederick Fairbanks. She notes Indiana property worth 4 million and Illinois land 4 million, with a $15 000 annual bequest under the will, far below her heir-at-law share.
Veterans of the Civil War began arriving in Columbus Ohio for the National G A R Encampment. Special trains from as far west as California delivered attendees while a religious service opened the events. Governor Cox and Mayor Karb welcomed guests as Commander in Chief Clarkeden Adams prepared to speak. A large parade is set for Wednesday with World War veterans joining. C B Lower of the First Pennsylvania Rifles attracted attention with his battle worn coat and Congressional Medal of Honor.
W. K. Marcellus a 65 year old multimillionaire of Ashtabula Ohio said he was beaten drugged and kidnapped by two strangers. He was robbed of 2400 and kept in a dark cellar with another wounded man for nine days before being released. He inherited 9 million from a Paris based uncle and arrived August 28 to arrange a trip to France. Police have not found the cellar.
John Tierney, 45, of 1114 Vinestreet, a former spoon keeper, died at his home yesterday morning from a self-inflicted bullet behind the left ear. Brother Roger found him after not hearing calls. widow Clara Tierney, sister Mrs Dennis Hogan, brother Roger, and two nephews survive. County Coroner A. C. Bauer investigates.
The British destroyer S-19 struck a Russian mine on Wednesday near Helsingfors. The captain, one officer, and ninety men were saved while eight officers and sixteen men are feared lost.
Warsaw reports Germany and communists plotting conflict as Poland cites patience and loyalty in Upper Silesia affairs. The note quotes Premier pledging no military aid to Silesian insurgents and honoring a signed treaty while warning that German Junkers and communists plan war to exploit allied tensions and internal turmoil.
In Pontiac Illinois on September 7 a prison escape attempt by two inmates led to a gunfight that left one reformatory officer and one inmate dead and two officers and another inmate wounded. The escapees fired on entering officers, fled to the hospital roof, were chased, and killed or wounded in the ensuing gunfire. The incident began after guards discovered the bars sawed in two and three bars partially cut, with others later pursuing and capturing a fleeing prisoner.
Blood stained fingerprints on Robin Cooper’s car, tied to the Nashville murder last week, prove too smeared for clues. Captain Robert Dunning of the Cincinnati police fingerprint unit, who examined the marks, returned to Cincinnati with no progress.
Mexican frontier troops will flash red white and green signals to American aviators who cross the frontier before opening fire. A War Department circular outlining the order was made public in Mexico City on Saturday.

Berlin reports that Germany regrets the Baltic evacuation cannot proceed due to insubordination of German troops in Courland. The government cites Allied restrictions and says compulsion is impossible, leading to the recall of General von der Goltz from Mitau as troops remain agitated and no evacuation plan can be prepared.
The Leviathan, carrying General John J. Pershing home from the war, was 135 miles off Sandy Hook at midnight traveling 22 miles per hour amid heavy wireless salutes. The ship will reach Hoboken around 8:30 AM, with ceremonies at City Hall and the Waldorf Astoria.
