Secretary Shaw issues circular to all national bank depositaries forbidding use of public funds for speculative call loans. He directs banks to loan at regular rates or return excess funds to the Treasury, noting the policy applies unless banks have large reserves on deposit with city correspondents.
A dispatch reports seven earthquake shocks felt yesterday evening in Talca Chile about 140 miles southwest of Santiago. The tremors were recorded amid ongoing seismic activity in the region.
Strong tremors were reported this morning in Kingston Island of St. Vincent and at St. Lucia and Grenada. Onthe Grenadese island the quake was powerful and long lasting while the Soufriere Volcano showed no activity.

Medical men called her escape miraculous.
