Hazard speed officer shoots child in car death case
The twenty month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Maggard of Hard Burley was fatally shot today by B E Hill Hazard fire chief and speed officer. Hill was arrested and charged after the child died in hospital. He claimed he fired to frighten the car to stop and did not intend to hit anyone. The Maggards were en route home from Hazard when the incident occurred. Hill surrendered to Perry County officers and a crowd gathered at the hospital. Officials refused interviews with Hill in jail. The child was sitting on her mothers lap when shot, the bullet entering her back under the left shoulder blade. The Maggards disputed speeding allegations.
