Paris War Office notes French advances south of the Somme with the capture of most of Berny-en-Santerre and the northern part of Vermandovillers. An artillery duel raged north of the river while the French defended a German trench line southeast of Belloy.
Antisuffragists attack the idea that vote advocates are unsuitable mothers. Tennessee leader Mrs. Guildford Dudley, president of the Tennessee Equal Suffrage Association, is highlighted as a prominent image in this campaign, noted as one of the South's prettiest young married women.
Charles E. Hughes Republican candidate spent ten minutes in Cleveland greeted by a delegation led by Harvey H. Drucker. He arrived by train at 8 45 and left for New York. He said he hoped to return later as his transcontinental tour neared completion and planned to campaign in Maine next.

Temperature readings and precipitation follow for various stations, including Montreal, St Louis, Boston, New York, Denver, Washington, Phoenix, Jacksonville, Chicago, Cincinnati, and others.

The Conference Committee agreed to drop stamp taxes in the emergency revenue bill in exchange for restoring a copper refiners tax. E P Ripley president of Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railway says the company will not comply with the Adamson eight hour law until ordered by the United States Supreme Court. He calls the act an advance of 20 to 25 percent in wages for the best paid railway workers.

Washington reports Germany’s submarine pledge question after Consul John N. McCann in Glasgow says twenty-eight Americans were aboard the British steamer Kelvinia sunk near Glasgow on September 2. McCann to investigate possible pledge violation and determine if sinking was by submarine.
The Barcelona section reports threats to destroy the United States cruiser Des Moines, stationed at Barcelona. The Spanish destroyer Villamil is docked beside the U S ship. Governor General Alfau, who was away, hurried back to Barcelona upon learning of the conspiracy.
A Weymouth dispatch reports the Danish steamship Jeanne of 1198 tons was sunk, probably by a German submarine. The crew were saved and the vessel had operated from Copenhagen.
The Italian steamer Nettuno from Spezia reached Newport News carrying two 76 millimeter guns on her after deck. Captain Cafiero told customs officials the weapons are for defensive purposes only.
