Army and Navy leaders remain at their desks during the holiday, continuing daily duties as civilians take time off. The two top officials show dedication to operations and national security despite the festive pause.
Washington reports escalating Mexican border tensions with Carranza forces accused of raids near Matamoros and Cavazos. Dispatches say Americans face danger on trains and along the Rio Grande as Funston notes possible intervention and seeks to coordinate joint action with Mexican authorities.
Governor Willis praised organized labor and eight hour and safety laws in Canton on Labor Day. He highlighted workmen's compensation and protection from industrial accidents, urging tariffs to bolster home industries and better sanitation to curb occupational disease. He praised unions as reformers and urged continued safety and labor protections.
At a Chicago convention the Friends of Peace rejected a formal embargo on arms shipments to Europe. They adopted a resolution urging no profit from weapon manufacture, freedom of the seas, and Americans to join in preventing unnecessary armament while opposing war except for national defense.
A ship named Hesperian sinks after an incident off the coast of Ireland. Authorities report a loss of life and ongoing salvage operations are underway. Rescue teams coordinate with coast guard vessels to search for survivors.
Queenstown reports show the Hesperian torpedoed off Ireland with about 4000 mail sacks lost and at least 26 dead. Captain Main and 20 crew survived many aboard describe the sudden attack as no warning was given and a submarine was sighted on the starboard bow.
Berlin reports that the Krupp plant at Essen has developed a steel process immune to rust and resistant to nitric acid, described by Rudolph Hans Bartsch in a series on Germany seen through Austrian eyes.
At Rothhausen aviation grounds in Rheinish Prussia an aeroplane carrying four passengers climbed 3200 meters, surpassing the prior world record by 159 meters according to Overseas News Agency.
An aeroplane crash at the Washington Indiana Labor Day celebration injured thirty people, with three in a dying condition. Aviator Oscar Cook of Chicago escaped unharmed as the craft swerved on landing and struck a refreshment stand before plowing into the crowd. Injured include Joseph Singleton 11 with skull fracture and Hazel Ballard 19 with a severed ear.
The Indiana State German American Alliance in Fort Wayne voted to condemn American traffic in arms and urged a law prohibiting passengers on ships carrying munitions of war.
The County Commissioners set November 9 as the date to hear the petition to create a village named North College Hill and to hear the annexation petition of the Children's Home and nearby territory to Cincinnati. The bond of Surveyor Beeh for 2000 dollars was approved.
At Murphy Street Ball Park thirty six men of Company C Second Infantry O N G cleared fighters promoters and spectators from the park preventing a Dillon Gilbert bout Promoters plan to sue Sheriff Eley Colonel Gale and others Governor Willis supported enforcing the law militia stayed to guard the park and the ring was torn down Promoter Ed Harter promised to sue and three bouts were rescheduled for the afternoon.
Detroit dispatch reports three women died and two men were seriously injured when a car stalled on tracks and was struck by a northbound interurban at a Wyandotte crossing. Victims include Mrs. John Hintz 60 Trenton Michigan and Mrs. Louis Hoffman 28 Wyandotte, with Mrs. Hintz's daughter and other relatives among the injured. The car was carried fifty feet and demolished.
Washington reports that a large majority of Republican delegates will come from primaries. States listed provide 574 primary delegates with others to be heard. Total convention likely around 1005 delegates. New York may reduce its 90 to 18. Ohio expects 48 votes saved.
Washington debates the Aus tro Hungarian ambassador Dr Constantin Theodore Dumba over a secret dispatch advocating using munitions factory workers to disrupt war output. Officials await his explanation before action. A wider claim says Germans and allies tried to curb artillery shipments to Europe. Dumba travels from Lennox to meet Secretary Lansing amid rising anti Dumba sentiment.
The 3466 ton Mimosa sailing from New York to Belfast was sunk off London on Sept 6. Built in 1905, the vessel was 352 feet long, 45 feet beam, 17 feet depth and owned by Mimosa Steam Shipping Company Ltd of London. It departed New York August 12.
Berlin reports indicate German forces hold the Friedrichstadt bridgehead while Russians threaten Riga's railway link. The focus shifts to the Baltic as German aircraft operate in the Gulf of Riga and a Russian defense holds Dagoe. The western artillery barrage continues as potential preparations for a larger offensive loom.
In London on September 6 a British tank steamer named Cymbeline sank with six crew members killed and six injured. Thirty-one crewmen were landed safely. Owned by Bear Creek Oil and Shipping of Liverpool the vessel had recently sailed from Port Arthur Texas on August 18 and Norfolk Virginia on August 21 bound for Dartmouth England.
Paris papers give great prominence to the Hesperian torpedoing six days after Von Bernstorff pledged no more liners would be torpedoed unless rammed or tried to escape. They seek a theory for such an action despite the vessel not appearing to ram or attempt escape.
