J P Morgan & Co announce termination of their financial agency with the New Haven Railroad to take effect in ninety days, prompting questions about debenture bond plans. Executive Committee meetings at Grand Central discussed the wreck disaster and a push for all steel passenger equipment.
Mrs J Borden Herriman linked to E H Harriman family has joined the Industrial Commission under Wilson to study labor capital relations. Senator Helen King Robinson of Colorado the first woman senator signals future lawmaking by women. Judge Mary Margaret Bartelme of Chicago leads the Delinquent Court and reports strong results with at risk youth.
A massive blaze in Hot Springs Arkansas destroyed the courthouse and many buildings after starting in a cabin. Two thousand people were displaced with no fatalities reported. Governor Hays and federal troops planned to patrol the burned area as the fire raged and spread along West Mountain.
The Japanese Premier Count Gombel Yamamoto travels to Nikko to report to the Emperor on the killings of several Japanese subjects in Nanking during fighting between Chinese Government troops and southern rebels. Detachments from Japanese warships rush to the coast. Japan seeks apology and indemnity, with punishment of those responsible.
Mayor Brand Whitlock, in Wequetoning Michigan on vacation, wires his secretary that he will not seek a fourth term on the Toledo municipal ticket. He has served four terms as mayor, elected each time on the independent ticket.
Three masked men armed with two revolvers stopped Deputy Sheriff J C Joyner and two J G White Construction employees at Parr Shoals twenty miles from Columbia. They seized $16000 in payroll cash, shot Joyner in the thigh, and fled into the woods as 700 company workers and local deputies swarm the area with bloodhounds.
Harry K Thaw's Canadian lawyers secured a new habeas corpus writ to halt his deportation to Vermont. The writ arrived by special train to Coaticooke, Quebec, delaying Thaw's transfer to Norton Mills Vermont. A related arrest for gambling occurred in Coaticooke with bail set at $600.
The Baltimore grand jury condemns the anti vice crusade and segregation drive saying police policy lacks clarity and that suppression harms neighborhoods. They fault the Society for the Suppression of Vice, note prostitution remains, and urge humane police treatment to aid reform rather than pressure and public suspicion.
Washington reports indicate the Wilson administration may push public ownership of telegraph lines. Democratic Post Office Committee members A G Allen and W E Cox offered mixed views, with Allen favoring public operation to cut rates and maintain service. Cox opposed a rail precedent, while other members remained noncommittal.
Val Winchester Sept 5 Ernest Baker a 22 year old Troop M Eleventh Cavalry drank nearly two ounces of carbolic acid in the camp at Winchester after the girl he trusted announced she would marry another. He enlisted at Ft Slocum last November and was sent to Hamilton Ohio where his widowed mother lives. Fellow troopers tried to comfort him but his despair widened until he drank poison and died fifteen minutes later in a company street with acid obtained from the company chest.
The jury convicted Caminetti of violating the White Slave Act, delivering a guilty verdict after trial.
Miss Cordelia Berreski, patient at The Fern sanitarium in German town, escaped in a night robe last evening. She slid down vines from a sixth story window and hid in bushes until found at daybreak while seeking money.
Cleveland news reports that Misa Lillian Huntington of Elyria, a society figure and heiress, will be the main witness in the blackmail case against Mrs. Margaret A. Carter of Elyria. Carter waived examination, was bound over to the Federal Grand Jury, and jailed in default of $10,000 bail after collapsing in court.
A jury found Caminetti guilty on one count after eight ballots and three hours of deliberation. He is freed on a $10,000 bond awaiting sentencing with Maury Diggs on September 10.
