A dramatic reunion address in Milwaukee ends with Lt General Arthur MacArthur’s fatal apoplectic stroke as he spoke to the Twenty-fourth Wisconsin volunteers. Captain Parsons near collapse and the body is later moved to the family home.
At Jackson state prison under five guard companies, nine convicts were strapped to a barrel and flogged with a three inch paddle as part of a mass punishment following riots. Three inmates fainted and were taken to the hospital while others faced 10 to 25 strokes. Governor Osborn backs corporal punishment and militia guards surround the facility amid dynamite fears from ex-convicts.
Syracuse dispatch reports Comptroller William A. Prendergast pressing Chairman William H. Hotchkiss to declare his candidacy or bow out. Hotchkiss announces his name will not be presented, while delegates swing toward Prendergast for governor with others lining up for lieutenant governor Cook Stern and state officers. Oscar Straus named permanent chairman as party factions clash over reform and boss influence.
Sister Stephenia of the St. Joseph convent Bayonne New Jersey died after clothing caught fire from a gas stove. She stood with arms uplifted in supplication as flames enveloped her and she collapsed unconscious, later dying two hours after rescue.
Roy Winkleman a 17 year old on a motorcycle was shot in the back by three men who demanded he stop while escorting Miss Nellie Burnett. The pair were riding in Chicago’s West Side parks when the gunfire began. the suspects fled and were chased by park police. The trio later admitted they intended to take the girl, not harm Winkleman or rob him.
Mrs John R McLean of Washington is reported seriously ill with pneumonia after falling ill Sunday. She is under care of physicians from Washington, Philadelphia, and Bar Harbor, with seven doctors consulting.
Charleston West Virginia Sept 5 Every company of the state militia has been ordered back to the Kanawha coal field where Governor Glasscock declared martial law. The 1 200 soldiers on strike duty include eight more companies and the boundary is to be extended. W Y Tucker a Jonesville Va private detective was sentenced to one year in prison for carrying a revolver without license and impersonating an officer. Tucker is a nonresident and a private detective.
In Princeton West Virginia Walter Johnston a 20 year old African American was lynched after being accused of assaulting a white 14 year old girl in Princeton. He was hanged then shot by a mob after authorities failed to protect him. The mob seized a train engine and flatcars to pursue fleeing officials and spread through the county. The mob identified Johnston at Lashmoor and he was killed under an arc light.
A 17 ton bay scow voyage from Golden Gate to Arctic told in a letter dated Point Barrow Aug 18. Skipper H C Slate and crew member Peter Peterson recount a 3000 mile journey begun May 16 with weathered decks during tow to sea.
A rear-end crash on the Mexican Central railroad at Calera near Aguas Calientes killed twelve passengers on a northbound train and wounded four. Among the dead is Division Superintendent Chrietzberg, an American, with his wife and five children in a private car. Injured were sent to Aguas Calientes. cause cited as a freight engineer running past signals.
Dr. Philip Newton racing home from a Philippines expedition learns his fiancée Alice Dorothy Nixon died Tuesday while trying to save a companion. A cable announcing his coming arrived just after her drowning. meanwhile a Manila cable notifying him of the tragedy missed him by hours.
Arthur L. Garford of Elyria heads the Ohio progressive ticket as the Bull Moose convention nominates state candidates. The slate includes Lieu tenant Governor Cue L. Taber, Secretary of State John L. Sullivan, Auditor Charles L. Allen, Treasurer William J. Kirtley Jr., Attorney General Robert R. Nevin, and others. Governor Hiram W. Johnson criticized Taft and Wilson as the crowd cheered the railroaded ticket amid a rousing platform.
The convention endorses Theodore Roosevelt era reform with James R. Garfield and Walter F. Brown guiding the nominating process. L. T. Taber of Belmont county is chosen as lieutenant governor candidate, with a platform calling for child labor bans and eight hour workday reforms.
