Washington observed Labor Day with government offices closed and business largely idle. No parade occurred, but Knights of Labor and trades unions organized trips to Potomac River resorts with organized activities and dances.
Bright sun and brisk breeze mark Labor Day with business halted and banks closed. The Central Federated Union cancels its parade to aid the unemployed, substituting a Balzer's Park picnic and prize contests. memorials at Greenwood Cemetery honor Henry George with floral tributes and speeches by various labor groups and Knights of Labor assemblies.
Boston September 4. Splendid weather allowed organized labor to hold a satisfactory holiday. The parade this forenoon drew between 8,000 and 10,000 representatives under Chief Marshal John J. Collins. This afternoon unions kept open house at their headquarters with collations served at various venues.
Labor Day in Chicago featured a parade and exercises at Lincoln Park by affiliated unions. An estimated 25 000 to 30 000 workers from over forty trades marched through business streets to the park. Speakers included Interstate Commerce Commissioner W J Calhoun Judge Richard Yates Mayor Rose and Milwaukee Mayor and others.
In Ashtabula Ohio on September 4 1900 longshoremen from Ashtabula Conneaut and Fairport united for a Labor Day demonstration far surpassing prior local events. Over 2000 participants including Fishermen's Union Bricklayers and railway orders marched amid closed businesses and festive decorations.
In Akron on Labor Day, all factories and stores closed as 15,000 people gather at Silver Lake for a Central Labor Union picnic. The day featured a sports program and large crowds enjoying the event.

In Chicago on September 4 a calcium light tank filled with carbolic acid gas exploded at the Chicago Calcium Light Company's machine room on Washington street. Frank Hopkins was fatally burned and Howard McClanathan severely injured. The first floor of the building was wrecked and several passersby were slightly cut by flying glass.
Admiral Dewey arrives aboard the United States cruiser Olympia at Gibraltar. Salutes are exchanged with shore batteries and the British battleship Devastation. Dewey plans to ashore stay and expects to sail for New York September 11. Peppiatt injured by accidental charge while ramming.
Rafael del Pan, born in the Philippine Islands and linked with the Madrid Filipino Junta, has traveled from Hongkong to Japan to urge recognition of the Filipino insurgents by the Japanese government. He was active recently on the China coast. The Washington volunteer regiment sails home tomorrow.
Secretary Root authorized the Quartermaster's Department to charter the Olympia the Victoria and the City of Rio to transport troops to the Philippines. The ships are already on the Pacific and will be ready for use within ten days.
Washington dispatch states that the Tartar departed Manila yesterday for San Francisco carrying 48 officers, 13 civilians, 400 discharged men, 735 enlisted men, 7 hospital corps, and a total of 1,210 aboard. The list specifies Kansas personnel among the ranks.

Wuffin, a Mormon, to withdraw the prosecution and flee the country. Wuffin and associates faced threats of lynching as the mob demanded dismissal. The mob previously assaulted Wuffin, and officials freed the accused leader Fleming Ridley. Contemporaneous notes from Southern Mormon Headquarters confirm the incident and the mob’s claim there is no justice for Mormons in Virginia.
Berlin dispatch reports Prussian Minister Dr Boss and Interior Minister Baron Von der Recke Horst relieved by request. Both will remain Ministers of State. Boss to receive crown order red eagle. Von der Recke Horst to receive grand cross red eagle. Herr Studt of Westphalia to replace Boss as Minister of Public Instruction and another governor to succeed Horst as Prussian Interior Minister.
Kokomo Indiana September report says Migunes Ball a laborer shot his father in law Henry Murden a well known dealer and insurance man fatally wounding him with two bullets then fatally shooting himself with a shotgun Ball is said to have acted after family trouble sparked the tragedy Murphy Murden died soon after leaving Ball in critical condition at Greentown where authorities investigated the motive as family discord.
Richard Hoeneck and Hyman Hundhausen confessed to the killing of Walter F. Koeller in Chicago after arrest near Grand Crossing. They said revenge motivated the stabbing linked to Koeller's father’s alleged role in a 13 year old street murder in Herman Missouri and a trial testimony against Hoeneck for arson, while Hundhausen cited a school incident in Dixon, Illinois.
Dredge No. 4 owned by G. H. Breymann & Bros. sank about five miles west of Fairport Harbor during the night. Loss estimated at 50000. Three men went overboard. the crew and tug recovered all but watchman Frank Provanche, who was found later badly injured washed ashore. Rescued were Jack Bourde Frank Bourde Chas Large Chas Blair Chas Moran Andrew Goulette and Captain W W Collins.
Eighty men fought fires all night near Englewood on the Burlington Railroad. Sunset wind abated enough to spare Englewood from destruction as Custer Peak timber burned. Fire held temporarily but wind rose again, with ranger reports calling this among the worst Black Hills fires. Five ranchers burned out.

Cape Haytien Sept 4 The steamer George S Croix with the Jiminez party aboard reached Baracoa but the expedition was detained. Jiminez found his followers jailed with no release order and communication with Santiago down. He plans to land at Puerto Plata tomorrow and seek an enthusiastic reception before traveling to Santiago de los Caballeros.
