A devastating wreck on the New Haven line between Wallingford and North Haven killed 23 and injured 50 as the White Mountain Express collided with the Bar Harbor Express. The incident, blamed on an obsolete block signal system, occurred amid heavy vacation traffic and crowded trains. Howard Elliott and J H Eustis had just begun their New Haven leadership duties that morning.

In Pontieux France a farmer Julien his wife and their three children Marius Rose Julie aged 25 19 and 29 and the grandmother beat Julie until death after believing she was possessed by Satan. The family called a priest who notified authorities.

Four men escaping from a trestle over a creek in Cleveland Ohio saved their lives by jumping into the water. A fifth man was struck by an Akron Bedford and Cleveland interurban car and died. The group had been at Calvary Cemetery and were returning from dinner when the accident occurred. The victim’s name was not learned.
Bloodhounds aided police today in the case of a burglary at Henry Woodford’s residence in Waverly. Bonds totaling 18000 dollars were found inside a window but 44000 dollars in cash and securities remain missing. The housekeeper told officers Woodford habitually kept large sums at home.
City Auditor Washburn refused to honor salary vouchers for Municipal Judge Fricke and several magistrates, citing doubts about the constitutionality of the Municipal Court law. Officials were left unpaid as the bank was told not to honor the checks pending court action. Magistrates planned to consult colleagues and consider mandamus proceedings, with further court decision expected to settle the dispute.
