French aviator Pegoud thrills spectators by flying upside down at 3 000 feet and tracing a giant S in the sky before auto self righting devices return the monoplane to an upright position. The stunt challenged Louis Bleriot’s theory on aircraft safety and demonstrated stability in a standard aeroplane. Miss Barbara Stephens.
The body of Paul J. Thompson Deputy Fire Commissioner of Nebraska was found with knife wounds under a Kansas City wharf. A bloody coat and Panama hat floated nearby, with letters to Mrs P H Thompson and to Nebraska Governor Morehead. Thompson had checked into a Grand Island hotel and attended a theater the previous evening.
Charles Beardsley, patient at City Hospital, diagnosed with rabies, was cured by subcutaneous quinine after a Chicago method used on dogs. Dr. Downey L. Harris reports fifteen grains injected, followed by two daily doses as symptoms improved.
Herbert H. Hoover, who walked 322 days across the continent, arrived in New York weighing 140 pounds after starting from 104 pounds. He said the trip was to improve health and that he won a $1,000 wager. Hoover is 21 and from Newark, New Jersey.
Four people died and several others injured when six high powered cars raced for twenty five miles at the Nashville State Fair grounds. The crash occurred on the fifth lap near the outside fence as driver Clyde Donovan swerved to miss a child. Names of the dead include John W. Sherrill and Thomas H. Bridges of Buick car No. 3, William Sherrod and Gooch Brown of Stutz No. 8. All victims were Nashville residents.
New York jurists are barred from the Thaw habeas hearing while Canadian and New York attorneys clash over where the case is heard. Magistrate Matthew Hutchison will decide if the proceedings occur in chambers or in open court with Canadian counsel admitted to argue the writ.
Senator Albert B. Cummins of Iowa rails at what he calls gambling on exchanges. He cites watered stocks and fictitious values, urging a 10 percent tax on trades not owned by the seller and tighter limits on futures to curb the perceived moral and economic threat.
A south bound Rock Island passenger train on the Decorah branch plunged down a ten foot embankment near Maynard Iowa. Three persons were killed and thirty five seriously injured. The accident was caused by rail spreading. Injured were rushed to Cedar Rapids by special train. Names listed include John Procter Kansas City I Hepworth Oelwein Ia and Mrs Cora Debow Oelwein Ia.

Municipal Judge Mahoney in Chicago released thirty two prisoners held for disorderly conduct on promising to appear for a hearing tomorrow. He planned no court session today and said he believed they would keep their pledges.
The International Association of Fire Engineers open their forty first annual convention at Grand Central Palace with chief speakers from New York and abroad. An engine accident injured two rubber workers, and Portsmouth Va Chief William R Walker was hospitalized after a second illness.
In Cairo Illinois on September 1 Dr B E Gordon a leading local physician was killed by Harvey R Fields an insurance solicitor. Fields said Gordon’s care caused his mother’s death ten days earlier and surrendered to police after the shooting. He is 25 with a wife and child.
George Roy Parker, a former household worker at Colonel Theodore Roosevelt’s Oyster Bay home, refuses to reveal where the stolen jewelry went. Burns detectives chase two remaining items, including a Roosevelt family heirloom watch fob with the coat of arms and a yellow jade ring. The loot totals about $5,000, with a jade ring or necklace valued near $1,000 plus Miss Theodore Roosevelt’s own jewelry.
A late afternoon auto ride south of Carcleville ended with a rollover into a roadside ditch. Walter Wihl 20 of Columbus died instantly. Kenneth Garner Columbus Board of Education chauffeur sustained internal injuries and cuts. Ire Myers injured in the back. Garner’s likely fatal injuries, the vehicle recently bought by the Board. The group had borrowed the car from the Board of Education garage and were speeding down a hill when the accident occurred.
Fourteen people were injured, none fatally, when two crowded cars on the St Clair avenue line collided this afternoon. The vehicles were filled with passengers bound for a park.
Mystic Shrine members from Osman Temple St Paul initiate 170 local candidates at Miraflores locks Panama Isthmus in a record ceremony. 190 Shriners attend banquet at Colon then depart. Imperial Potentate W W Irwin praises Isthmus hospitality and the pilgrimage.
A Toledo section passenger train collided with a switch engine in Montpelier Ohio yards injuring four trainmen and one passenger. Conductor Bw. J. Gebhart of Peru suffered a skull fracture while brakeman EB. J. Richmond and mail clerk H. W. Hill were badly cut. Engineer W. F. Lefferts of Toledo and passenger P. J. Lash of Blakeslee also sustained injuries.
The American Boiler Manufacturers Association opened its twenty fifth annual convention in Cleveland with welcome from Mayor Baker and a reply by President E D Meter. About four hundred delegates from the United States and Canada attend as the four day meeting begins.
