In Switzerland Sept 1 Turkish delegates press for abrogation of the February Italian law annexing Tripoli and propose Tripoli be governed by a sultan’s appointee chosen by Italy. Giolitti rejects ceding Tripoli while Cyrenaica remains Turkish.
Riot renewed at Cabin Creek as miners strike continues. Three battles between strikers and private detectives leave one dead and many wounded. Five national guard companies rush to the scene with militia ready to be deployed. martial law possible within 48 hours. Mass meetings planned by strikers, militia ordered to break them up.
New York announces the rekindled engagement of Miss Antoinette Hecksher, former Philadelphia socialite, and Hon. Oliver G. B. Brett, son of Viscount Esher. The couple split last winter after reports of discord over Brett’s attention to other women, later reconciled through a friend. The Brett family has long held royal court positions.
Six were killed and two fatally injured when Chicago and Northwestern train No. 112 derailed two miles north of Lyndhurst Wisconsin after a washout. Twenty one other passengers were slightly cut and bruised as the Lake Shore division suffered considerable damage and hospital treatment followed.

The Rev Louis B Sawyer presided at the union church service with honorary vice presidents including state and municipal officers foreign consuls supreme court members federal officials army and navy officers and ministers of many denominations. A memorial service was planned at Salvation Army posts citywide.
