London reports publish the Transvaal dispatches of August 19 21 and the Imperial reply of August 28. The notes stress accurate versions after Pretoria error. Proposals hinge on fringe of British noninterference and surrender of suzerainty while imperial reply supports franchise with no conditions hampering it and notes arbitration will need concurrent settlement at the Cape Town conference. Pretoria rejects Chamberlain as alternative to a joint inquiry.
News from Texarkana Ark reports Captain R. E. Boyle the mayor shot and killed A. L. Culberson an attorney and Boyle's brother-in-law in Atlanta Texas after a dispute. They argued yesterday and fought, were separated, then met today in front of the Post Office where the fatal shooting occurred. Boyle surrendered to officers and refused to discuss the affair.
Five people drowned at Blackrock in Bridgeport while sea bathing. Elijah Middlebrook, farmer from Easton, May Middlebrook 14, Tony Koehler 14, Ethel Hitt 11, and Florence Hitt 14 died after drifting beyond their depth. Andrew Koehler and Louis Hitt survived. Three bodies were recovered.
News wires report a copper mine flood at Besshi on Shikoku Island causing about six hundred deaths. Rescue and salvage efforts are underway as authorities assess the disaster and its impact on workers and the local community.
A Louisville based Cumberland Falls Company forms to harness Cumberland River Falls in Whiteley County. A Knox County resident died of yellow fever after arriving from Cuba. The diagnosis by Dr Keffinger followed quarantine at Sanborn where contacts were placed under a five day quarantine. The state Board of Health approved the local actions as precautionary measures against spread.
Jacksonville reports key West cut off by health board orders after two deaths and several yellow fever cases. Dr. J Y Porter, executive officer, ordered quarantine on Key West from Virginia after receiving Dr Charles Sweeting’s report. Seven more cases under surveillance. named patients include Oakley Stockin Morris Browder Pate.
Authorities establish launch quarantine patrols at Misrai and Tampa to guard against illness from Key West. Additional inspectors are assigned, and all incoming vessels must stop at the quarantine station, which will be the sole contact point with Key West.
A New Orleans autopsy on Young F. Adolph, who died yesterday, found yellow fever caused the death. The case was reported four days earlier, but Dr. Murphy of the Marine Hospital service initially doubted yellow fever.
Austin Tex Sept 1 The State Health Department reported one death from yellow fever in New Orleans this afternoon State Health Officer Blunt ordered a rigid quarantine against New Orleans on passenger and freight business to curb the outbreak.
Mobile officials imposed a quarantine against persons baggage and freight from New Orleans entering Mobile County after one death from yellow fever and two cases. Querafitine is proclaimed against Key West.
Bishop Janssen accepted Father Cluse’s resignation from St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church after protests from parish members who have been excommunicated. Father Harkins of St Mary’s Parish was named administrator of St Patrick pending a decision from Mgr Martinelli in Washington. The move appears to be a back-down after the clash over appointing a German priest to the Irish parish.
