An unknown assailant entered Henry Tomlinson's stock barn in Crawfordsville. After slitting the throats of two valuable stallions, the perpetrator set the barn ablaze to cover the crime. Tomlinson awakened and attempted rescue, suffering severe burns and injuries that may prove fatal.
The German steamship Heligoland from Nordenham faced a near destruction when a huge meteor descended from the northeast striking water under the bow and enveloping the vessel in steam. Captain Rittern and crew felt intense heat and heard a dynamite-like explosion as the sea lit up around the ship. The vessel rode the heavy swell at a few knots amid a damp, moonless night.

Explosion at a saw mill in Garrett's Bend Lincoln County West Virginia killed Thomas Moore the proprietor and his son and badly injured two other workers News dispatched from Charleston West Virginia Sept 1 reports the tragedy at the boiler room of the Garretts Bend mill with fatalities and injuries.
Orville Pence an 18 year old son of Wm Pence of Tiffin Ohio was arrested for perjury by Constable Watkins Bluffton Allen County. The warrant by his father in law Samuel Dennis alleges Pence lied about being of age to marry Dennis's daughter after a Bluffton flirtation with a traveling mine man. Pence was taken to Bluffton on a late train and his wife will follow.
In Sandusky Ohio early this morning Fred Dunn attacked Fred Strobel with a razor outside Fred Foster's saloon after rumors harmed Dunn’s character. Strobel died soon after and Dunn fled by a nearby boat. authorities seek the missing man who vanished from sight.
Special Dispatch reports Bob Norman escapees captured today at Elkhorn Kentucky six miles south of Nicholasville He was jailed for refusing to pay a boarding house bill with twenty eight days left to serve He faces extended punishment under a ten fold law enacting 230 days of punishment by the City Council
Cyrus H. McCormick declares for McKinley and warns a Bryan victory would curb his business. He calls free silver a political delusion and says welfare of the country supersedes personal gain, urging other business leaders to state their positions.
A state branch of the National Anti-Saloon League was organized with Rev. A. B. Rohrbaugh named permanent Chairman and Rev. J. M. Crowe as Secretary. Committees and by-laws were adopted as counties represented and plans laid for league expansion. A mass meeting in Parkersburg featured Bishop Fitzgerald and other speakers.
Jos. Finney an 81 year old farmer from Wayne County Indiana has gone insane he believes his wife and daughter dug a hidden cellar beneath their home He has begun digging cutting a floor hole and sawing carpet in a search He will be cared for privately.
Lewis Dawson, a member of the Flying Roll, appeared in Richmond Indiana Police Court for cruelly treating his wife. He claimed to be the Messiah and wore hair and beard as a sign, and was fined for his conduct.
John B. Ketcham II, former bank president and Toledo native, was robbed in Chicago of 28000 dollars in negotiable stocks and bonds. Detectives traced the theft to a man and woman but lacked enough evidence to arrest. Securities included Diamond Match, West Chicago Street Railway, and Toledo Club Company holdings.
In South Bend Indiana on September 1 a four year old child died after accidentally sucking a sand burr into her wind pipe. This is reported as a second such case in the area.

Special dispatch reports Kee, once charged as author of dynamite outrages blamed on William Henson, was released. He says officers tried to force a waiver of damages for false imprisonment and abduction. Kee has not decided on action, consulting attorney Theo. K. Funk.
Washington Sept 1 Secretary Hoke Smith closed his administration of Interior Department affairs and retired from the Cabinet. He signed the last papers yesterday and spent today bidding goodbye to colleagues and staff. Francis will take oath later this week and will have a clear field to begin. Smith enforced strict civil service merit promotions and discharged underperforming appointees, shaping a highly proficient department. He reorganized Chiefs of Divisions to be more like under secretaries and planned salary rises to deepen department leadership.
The Treasury reports the public debt at the close of business yesterday stood at 978,497,104 dollars, up 12,342,684 for the month due to cash losses from expenditures exceeding receipts. The breakdown shows interest bearing debt at 847,364,260. noninterest debt at 372,858,376. cash in Treasury totaling 849,388,746 against demand liabilities of 606,042,345 leaving 243,346,400 cash available.

A horse owned by Joseph McFarland bolted during a Democratic gathering in Sardinia Ohio. McFarland and his wife were thrown from the buggy. The wife suffered both legs broken and a dislocated hip while McFarland had serious head cuts and two broken leg bones.
An explosion at the Equitable Powder Company's plant four and a half miles east of Alton Illinois killed three workers Henry Rogers William Rettgers and Thomas Keffer. The blast caused a fire threatening the storehouse and shook the area, damaging buildings in Hast Alton and Upper Alton and prompting many residents to fear an earthquake.
Frank Morris aged eighteen was hanged at 1:30 p.m. for the two year old murder of farmer Bernard Loker of Chestnut Ridge near Connellsville. The motive was robbery and Morris showed no remorse.
In Kentucky on September 1 Prof G A Mingo colored was tried for selling examination questions. John H Mingo confessed Martha Mingo bought the questions from Mrs Treacy wife of F P Treacy Powell County schools superintendent. John H Mingo fined 50 and costs. bond posted. G A Mingo acquitted.
