A woman faced public disgrace after failing to secure bond, with the incident described as wrecking her mind and eroding her standing in the community. Local authorities noted the consequences of the case and the social fallout.
Agatha Wilker, a German girl, jailed for forty two days as a crime witness, is released on her own recognizance after public sympathy and prosecutor approval. She is now in Deaconess Hospital, mind deteriorating and spoken English lacking. William Muller, her alleged assailant, was freed on bond and walks the streets.
R C Bundy, a colored candidate, will take the naval academy examination on Thursday after reporting with about one hundred candidates. John W Smith of Chicago has not yet appeared. Partisans show strong interest while whites resist the idea of a colored commander with a white crew aboard.
A sleeper and day coach derailed near Appleby Station on the southbound Houston East and West Texas line. D. D. Moss of Chireno was killed, M. L. Richardson of Timpson seriously injured, J. F. Summers and B. D. Chapman of Nacogdoches badly crushed. Conductor Lockhard among several others injured.
Colorado educator William F. Slocum declines the Oberlin College presidency. He cites obligations to Colorado College and its Rae, and states that accepting would require severing ties with his current duties. Special Dispatch to the Commercial Tribune. Oberlin Ohio August 31.
Dr. Vickers refuses to surrender his office and threatens to sue if interfered with. The board tells teachers and pupils to report to acting Superintendent Prof Hudson and orders janitors to bar Vickers from school property. Hudson, Theo dore Doty’s son in law, is expected to be elected Superintendent at Friday’s board meeting.
Mrs Wallace Riley sues Thomas Allen in Boone Circuit Court for 10000 alleging Allen killed her husband in the Lebanon Indiana post office lobby on June 1 after a dispute over his daughter marrying Allen’s son. Two shots by Riley and four by Allen preceded the fatal shooting. The grand jury did not indict Allen.
A young woman registered as Miss Blanche Wilson of New York City and killed herself in the Victoria Hotel, leaving a note requesting no identification. Police partially identify her as Martha Forsythe. she was about 25, 5 feet 2 inches, 150 pounds, with brown eyes and hair, wearing a green dress and sailor hat.
Great relief in Bombay as tribesmen blocking Kohat Pass are dispersed by Colonel Gordons column moving from Peshawar. Dispatches say all quiet at Peshawar, with occasional exchanges and a dawn cavalry reconnaissance. Quetta reports rising tribal assembling on hills near March Musket Bolan line and Afghan chieftains fleeing toward the border.
In Indianapolis a Wagner car Shasta porter found Mrs. J A Downing of Louisville dead in her berth on the Petoskey to Louisville run. Her husband and mother were in the drawing room and unaware until aroused. The car was entering Richmond when discovered. Body sent to Louisville. presumed heart trouble.
Madrid reports the government is drafting a plan to banish all anarchists from Spain. It is said they will not be allowed to land in England and must be deported to an American republic or a distant Spanish possession.
In Jeffersonville Indiana on August 31 a family of eight led by Benjamin Smith falls ill with typhoid fever. One child has died and another remains seriously ill as health officials investigate the outbreak and urge sanitation measures.
President Faure arrived from Dunkirk to a grand Paris welcome at the Northern Station and Elysee Palace. A bomb exploded near the Madeleine church causing arrests, noninjury, and police probes. The event followed earlier attacks and sparked widespread celebrations marked by cheers for Faure.
A 150 person band left the opera with flags shouting Down with Emperor William. Paris police halted them on Rue Aguesseau and the march dispersed after a scuffle. Two leaders were arrested.
Democratic primaries in South Carolina nominate McLaurin for the United States Senate to fill the vacancy from the death of Senator Earle, with a considerable majority over Evans and Irby in Columbia.
Mrs. Rebecca Hartman of Bellefontaine Ohio rose from bed after three years of paralysis and silence following prayers by M E church ladies. She declared she was cured and walked about the room, saying faith healed her.
A 4800 pound ingot caused a 40 ton fly wheel at Burgess Steel and Iron Works to burst. John Murphy was seated near the wheel when a fragment struck his chair and hurled him thirty feet. The mill roof was perforated by debris, a furnace damaged, and the mill set afire. Part of the mill will close until a new fly wheel is obtained.
A farewell dinner was given to Hon S M Taylor the departing Consul to Glasgow in Urbana Ohio On August 31 friends from personal and political circles attended The Taylor family sails September 11 for Liverpool to visit Consul Boyle then goes to Glasgow Scotland where he will represent the United States as Consul Forty guests were present Judge Heiserman presided and several speeches were made.
Three witnesses testified for the prosecution in the Luetgert murder trial at Chicago. Mrs Agatha Tosch described Luetgert urging silence about smoke from the factory the night his wife vanished and spoke of his bitter contempt for his wife. Watchman Bialk recounted caustic potash barrels, steam in the vat, and bones found in the vat and smokehouse as officers questioned Luetgert who warned him to keep silent. Officer Dean and Klinger noted the investigative details and Luetgert's attempts to reassure workers.
Tramps robbed four men traveling from Youngstown to Cleveland on an Erie freight train near Phalanx Ohio. After stealing their money they were forced off the train. One man resisted and fell or was thrown to his death. He remains unidentified. Two companions, Samuel Gordon of Allegheny Pennsylvania and August Jungell of Rochester Minnesota, do not know the victim. The robbers are at large. The deceased stood about five feet eight inches with dark hair.
Mrs. Frank Simm of 1216 Michigan avenue heard a noise in a rear room and faced a masked thief who climbed through an open window and drew a revolver. He threatened to shoot, she fainted, and the burglar splashed water in her face to revive her before fleeing.
Suit filed by the First National Bank Indianapolis Foundry Company and Natl Malleable Company seeks removal of Jesse H. Brooks as assignee of Champion Manufacturing Company after an assignment. Creditors contend the assignee is not satisfactory and seek reversal on that ground.
In Steubenville Ohio Aug 51 residents debate Stanton birthplace with the tablet at 516 Market Street in front of the home claimed as his birthplace. Some insist he was born on Third Street while others cite a lower Market Street site pointed to by James Polk McMurray and Pamphylia Stanton Wolcott.
The Executive Committee met at the Auditorium with Western and Middle States represented. Plans discussed target state elections in Maryland Virginia Kentucky Ohio Iowa and Massachusetts this fall. A seven member quorum was set for regular meetings and Omaha June convention details were addressed with President McKinley expected at the Trans Mississippian exposition.
Washington Aug. 31 One of the nation’s famed hotels moves toward closure as Willard's sits under marshal guard after leaseholder O G Staples invokes rent arrears. Morgan and Morgan Lewis invested about 65 000 in furniture and notes. Grant checked in 1865 seeking a room atop the house, with John Sherman recognizing him at dinner.
Probate Judge Dean names Mrs. Elizabeth H. Carruthers to succeed Prof. E. B. Cox as a member of the Board of County School Examiners and elevates her as possibly the first woman in the state to hold that post. She is also the first woman on the Xenia School Board and serves as treasurer.
Indiana report states Jesse Harris a West Indianapolis grocer shot himself before daybreak in front of his store. He reportedly had ongoing trouble with a neighbor since last Saturday and had been drinking heavily.
At Reading Pennsylvania the Democratic State Convention nominated Walter E Ritter for Auditor General and M B Brown for State Treasurer. The event featured a violent morning clash over Harritys seat on the National Committee, police forced to restore order. Bryan was praised for leadership and the party endorsed a return to the gold standard stance. Ritter later reportedly declined the nomination.
Frankfort reports Auditor Stone challenges Democratic press claims about penitentiary management. He says an early fiscal year audit shows the state earned a net profit of seventeen thousand dollars from penitentiary contracts, countering talk of monthly losses.

In Wooster on a Wheeling & Lake Erie excursion, a barn struck by lightning sparked chaos as horses fled onto a trestle crossing a creek. A boy with a lantern halted the approaching midnight train, preventing disaster. Deputy Clerk John Myers notes the narrow escape occurred about ten miles east of Massillon.
Lorain County Treasurer seized United States Express Company goods in Elyria for unpaid taxes for 189 and 189% years. Agent J B Letson paid $797 under protest, and the goods were released shortly after.
In Columbus Indiana on a Friday night near Nashville Brown County John Sherwood and his daughter Lillie were dragged from bed by whitecappers tied to a tree and lashed until blood flowed. Four Brummett brothers Tom Campbell and Cary Rogers face bond set at 3200 dollars charged with the act. Lillie Sherwood has a pending paternity suit against one Brummett boy.
In Fredericksburg Ohio an engine exploded killing engineer William Thornley and fireman Louis Brown and badly injuring brakeman H E Shank. Thornley and Brown were thrown long distances with multiple injuries. The blast toppled trees and scattered engine parts over a wide area. the cause is believed linked to low water in the boiler.
In Muncie Aug 31 an explosion leveled the Jacob Replogle & Sons sawmill and tile factory at Cowan Station. Jacob Replogle 62 and his son Clinton 25 were fatally injured. Another son Amos 30s was bruised but not seriously hurt. Amos pulled his father and brother to safety while all three owners operated the mill. Debris spread a quarter mile.
Frank Miller, condemned killer scheduled for electric chair Thursday night in Columbus Ohio, sent a crime statement to a Warsaw newspaper. Born near Warsaw his parents and Polish sweetheart know little of his fate. He still claims self defense against Mrs Saluda Miller after being attacked with a pitch fork and may offer a fuller confession before execution.
The Republican State Central Committee met at Columbus headquarters with all members present except six. Two absentees were Messrs. Fagin and Durr of Cincinnati.
Sheriff McLain brought Shofstoll and Snyder from Springfield and placed them in Urbana jail amid a county wide uproar over an attempted outrage on two young women. The tension has subsided and no danger is expected.
In Lawrenceburg Kentucky Bertha Gill aged 12 daughter of Janet Gill was found dead. The coroner's inquest determined she accidentally shot herself with an old pistol.
Chicago convention of labor leaders massed around Debs dominated the session. Resolutions urge ending injunctions and outline steps toward action by Congress within three weeks. Debs urged workers to stand firm, preparing for possible mass action and insistence on constitutional rights.
