C P Moore of Green River Kentucky resisted arrest for disorderly conduct in Ironton Ohio and opened fire with a 38 caliber pistol. A bullet killed Mrs Lot Henthorn at a residence. Officer George Mayne was wounded and Moore surrendered after being injured. A mob surrounded the scene but violence subsided with Moore jailed for safety.
Mrs Bennie E Hinthorn daughter of Mr B Norris Columbus is shot in Ironton. Mrs Norris and her son traveled to Ironton tonight. Hinthorn had lived for several years in Cincinnati.
General Merriam at Denver reported to the Adjutant General that Captain Wright with half a troop of the Ninth Cavalry at Naco on the Mexican border was told to prevent armed crossings. He will stay at Naco and enforce disarmament of any persistent armed men from either side amid saloon-linked disorder.
James E. Watson of Rushville Republican congressman promised in a letter to local ministers to vote for the expulsion of B H Roberts the polygamist elected from Utah. The Richmond Ind dispatch notes the pledge was made October 20.
Washington reports Admiral Dewey has become engaged to Mrs W B Hazen widow of General Hazen and sister of John R McLean. The wedding date is not fixed and may occur in November with Mrs Hazen described as a woman of large means and prominent Washington circles.
Rev Purley A Baker of Columbus, head of the Ohio Anti-Saloon League, was sued in common pleas court for 10000 damages by Squire Moses W King of Rising Sun for false arrest and defamation. The suit stems from an incident at Union Depot where Baker accused King of pickpocketing him.
