Breathitt County faces a tense political campaign as armed men raid a bank and seize official ballots. Sheriff Crawford pursues suspects and arrests county clerk S. H. Hurst on fraud charges after the exchange, bail set at 2500 dollars. The feud history and party tensions frame the incident amid the November election.
C T Havens of Cincinnati is in critical condition with a fractured skull and other injuries after a horse threw him into a badger hole while hunting coyotes near Cheyenne on October 28. Havens, 52, a conductor, is visiting his son B G Havens, a Cheyenne police officer, and another son confirms the father’s identity.
James McMahon pleaded guilty in Kansas City Kansas to the murders of his two sisters Rose McMahon and Mrs Alonzo Van Royen and his brother-in-law Alonzo Van Royen. He received a life sentence at Lansing penitentiary within ten minutes of the case being opened. A deputy sheriff escorted the prisoner to the penitentiary later that night. Both McMahon and his family sought to settle the case quickly and asked officials to waive a jury trial.
Newport society figure Mrs Spottswood D. Schenck daughter will marry William Laimbeer at the Hotel Savoy New York. She divorced from Captain Glen Collins of the British army after two years of marriage. Laimbeer was formerly married to Clara Bloodgood.
The Missoula dispatch reports George W. Solleder swore Barrill claimed Dr. Cook climbed Mount McKinley. Cook counters with a new sworn affidavit asserting he reached the summit on Sept. 16, 1906 and left records on the peak.
Sevent h ward voters packed Cosmopolitan hall for a Republican mass meeting in Over-the-Rhine as Dr. Schwab and party leaders were lauded. Speakers urged independence from Democratic promises, citing past administrations, with Charles A. Miller and Thomas H. Darby among the vocal supporters.
Testimony in the Mrs. John Jacob Astor versus Col. Astor suit is nearly complete. Referee Charles H. Young will submit papers to Justice Mills in Dutchess County for filing with the Poughkeepsie clerk. After approval the papers will be sealed from public view. The defense offers no denial or confirmation that the suit is for absolute divorce rather than separation.
Mason county reports feverish excitement over night rider raids and will request troops from Governor Willson. After raids on the homes of Benjamin Longnecker and George Kreitz, tobacco growers not in the Burley Tobacco Society pool armed themselves. A sheriff and posse scour the area to find the riders blamed by Kreitz, who fled after being challenged with a shotgun. Kreitz then joined the Burley Tobacco Corporation pool under neighbor advice.

John Kilgour presented a deed to President Dabney endowing fifteen acres west of the Observatory site to the University of Cincinnati. The land joins the observatory property and will be developed into a park. Kilgour’s philanthropy also supports the university’s engineering coeducation plan.
In Cleveland Ohio on October 29 a Austrian named Joseph F Olaynick 38 fired through cafe window toward the mayor entering with a councilman Bernstein but the bullet missed by three feet. Olaynick was arrested on firearms charges and police say no attempt on the mayor was intended.
Charles C. Dickinson president of the Carnegie Trust Company and an officer and director in several financial and railroad firms was thrown from his saddle horse in Central Park today and sustained serious injuries.
Carlo di Fornarro, a caricaturist and journalist, found guilty by a jury of malicious libel before Judge Malone in General Sessions. He is remanded to the Tombs for sentencing on Monday. The libel targeted Rafael Reyes Espindora, editor of El Imparcial of Mexico City, in a book titled Diaz the Czar of Mexico.
Michael Dacklovitz, claiming fellow Erie railroad workers tortured him for not buying drinks, crawled to a barn near Randall Ohio. After four days without food or water he set fire to call for aid and was arrested for arson. He is bound over to the grand jury on $500 bond and accuses Charles Schmitts of leading the torture.
Three inmates at Hats County Jail escaped using saws secured earlier. The fugitives were C. F. Scott jailed for grand larceny Howard Taylor and George Laman jailed for house breaking. The escape was discovered after 8 pm when the sheriff found three empty cells and a torn outer grate.
New York on October 29 reports Commissioner of Immigration Williams will hold hearings for about 150 Italians suspected of Black Hand membership. The actions aim at deportation following years of blackmail.
A. D. Alderman editor of The Marietta Journal was charged with criminal libel after a warrant issued over allegations that Mayor B. J. McKinney allowed a speakeasy to operate without police interference. Alderman is a Republican committee member.
President Taft arrives in New Orleans after delays on the Mississippi trip aboard the Oleander. Crowds greet him at Baton Rouge and Natchez as river boats, including the Erastus Wells and Alton, race for position.
In Salamis a 20 minute naval battle broke out between government forces and a mutinous squadron led by Lt Tibaldos. The arsenal was briefly seized then recaptured. Tibaldos pressed for a minister of marine post while the Military league debated response. Government vowed to suppress the outbreak.
In New York on October 29 Attorney General Wickersham spoke for Otto Bannard the Republican mayoral nominee He said he acted as a citizen and taxpayer not as a federal official or cabinet member to help place competent honest leaders in city government.
