Senator Foraker arrives in Athens Ohio amid fireworks parades and a student demonstration. Grosvenor and Foraker ride through cheering crowds as the visit boosts Republican spirits with plans for upcoming stops and talks across Ohio.
A large crowd greets Senator Foraker in Logan Ohio as he arrives by train from Hocking County. Judge Bright presides at the meeting with Congressman Grosvenor delivering the opening address and defending Foraker against opposing claims of tax policy.
In Fort Wayne a wealthy farmer Charles Dunn faces murder and assault charges over the death of eleven year old Alice Cothrell found in a cistern. Marie Sampleson testified of an attempted assault by Dunn and described earlier threats. She admitted improper relations with Dunn and details about other threats as the defense speculates. Reed, the farmhand, is to testify next, likely strengthening the case.
Lord Kitchener reports October 24 fighting near the Great Marico River where De La Rey and Kemp attacked a British force and were repulsed after heavy losses. Seventy four Boers killed or wounded and 471 rifles taken. The British suffered 28 killed 55 wounded.
Dublin Oct 29 A force of constabulary shattered a United Irish League demonstration at Kilmain Mayo though unproclaimed The police barred John O Donnell M P and Peter Regan from speaking William Redmond was assaulted O Donnell dragged through the street Regan suffered a broken hand as men women and children were trampled or clubbed.
New York. Bourke Cockran sustained severe injuries after being thrown from a horse at Sand Point L I. He was found unconscious with a head wound and bruises. Doctors reported a severe concussion but no skull fracture. He is being kept quiet at home. no witnesses exist for the accident.
W C Hatch, 40, traveling salesman for a Pittsburg lumber firm, was found with a broken neck on the Wellsville river bank. Officials say foul play is suspected though death cause remains unknown. Hatch is from Pittsburg and the discovery was reported from East Liverpool Ohio.
In Kokomo Indiana on October 29 N M Crume found neighbor L L Justice hugging his wife at dinner. Crume protested and Justice attacked with a knife and revolver before being arrested.
Manila reports the hat and umbrella factory employing 900 workers will relocate to Hongkong after a tariff induced shutdown. The move marks a notable labor problem stemming from the new tariff regime.
Justice MacLean of New York Supreme Court grants a certificate of reasonable doubt for John Most editor of an anarchist paper. He faced a twelve month sentence over publishing an article titled Murder vs. Murder tied to McKinley’s assassination. The judge notes plagiarism alone may not be a criminal offense and that the indecency claim rests on the article’s language rather than explicit acts.
Dutch longshoremen visiting Hamburg to gain German cooperation in boycotting English ships over the Boer War. Hamburg longshoremen unanimously back the plan though Hamburg newspapers warn it could damage German trade more than British trade and call the scheme impractical.
In Cleveland on October 29 the Commercial Tribune reported Mayor Johnson’s ties to “reds.” He admitted nothing and refused to comment while denouncing the paper and the Liberty Club. He recalled firing city employee Henry Kline who entertained Emma Goldman and linked to Czolgosz.
Columbus report notes Cleveland mayor Tom Johnson linked to anarchist circle through minutes and letters. The piece says Johnson refused to campaign beyond Cleveland and the Democratic State Committee wishes he would step aside.
Washington reports Countess Mabel Edith Russell cables Assistant Secretary Taylor demanding a public apology for a statement about Earl Russell’s American divorce. Taylor denies making the claim and says he knows nothing of the proceedings beyond newspaper reports. He notes the Earl’s landing hinges on any charges beyond his Lords’ bigamy conviction.
The divorce proceedings between Frederick M. Gebhard and Louise Morris Gebhard were finalized in Luix City. The court ordered Mr Gebhard to pay his former wife 135000 and to transfer his New York residence.
Louise De Gardene Classe formerly Countess of France in Salt Lake City was naturalized today. Related to the Bourbon royal family of France, she received citizenship papers on October 29 in Utah.
James McGarry known as the original of Mr Dooley sketches died at County Hospital Chicago after a long illness. Born in Galway Ireland he was 73 and had lived in Chicago since 1850. He ran a saloon on 121 Dearborn street long a gathering spot for prominent locals where the Dudley satires were planned. He left about 28000 in railway bonds.
Kokomo Ind Oct 29 Roy and Fred Marvin and Raymond McVeta aged 9 and 11 were indicted by the grand jury on the charge of stoning to death Eddie McKee aged 13. The boys were playing when a quarrel led to rocks being thrown causing his death.
Mme Wu Ting Fang wife of the Chinese Minister to the United States arrived in San Francisco aboard the steamer Caleac from Chim. She is pained by her daughter Miss Wu Ching the reports say.
Time four minutes. Last words of assassin glad of his deed and sorry at not seeing his father. Autopsy results show the brain normal and above the average.
In Auburn New York on October 29 the assassin Leon Czolgosz was executed with mechanical precision in the state prison death chamber. Officials described his demeanor as stark and unrepentant while noting no guards or disruption. The body was disposed of by chemical methods and lime, and prison routines continued without incident.
State Railroad Commissioner Ashley W. Cole describes witnessing the execution of President McKinley’s assassin in Auburn New York, noting the electric chair setup with twenty four bulbs and the condemned man’s calm demeanor and final words about his crime and regret for not seeing his father during the procedure.
