At Naval Air Station Lakehurst New Jersey Graf Zeppelin began its return flight to Germany just after 1:54 this morning. Passengers crowded the cabin windows as sailors prepared the launch and removed scaffolding for the moonlit takeoff amid a light seven mile per hour wind.
Frankie Fite eight month old infant of Jack Fite of 952 Betts street died yesterday morning at St. Mary's Hospital from burns received when scalded at home on Saturday night.
Reports from Fenchow in Shansi province say two thousand people have died in twenty towns from a plague. The outbreak is described as serious with the disease out of control.
The Outlook plans to publish findings arguing Bartolomeo Vanzetti was innocent of the Bridgewater payroll holdup and that his conviction aided the later Braintree case. Health officials warn Ohio rabbit hunters about Tularemia a germ carried by rabbits that can infect humans with fever ulcers swollen glands and prolonged illness. Dr Peters urges thorough hand washing after fieldwork wearing gloves when skinning and cooking rabbits to kill the germ. County Health Officer Dr Neal notes the Bible also warns about disease from rabbits and urges preparedness ahead of the November 15 hunting season.
A fire in a one and a half story frame home on Amy Avenue east of Madisonville burned Harry Jamison a six year old negro to death and seriously burned his brother Henry twenty one while eight other family members including parents Charles and Thelma Jamison suffered bruises or burns. Firemen faced dense flames and limited access to rescue all escapees leaping from windows. The blaze started from a defective flue and the loss is estimated at one thousand dollars.
A series of explosions at the Publicker Commercial Alcohol Company plant in Philadelphia caused two deaths and an estimated $2,000,000 in damage. Federal agent Francis Sears and mechanic Hugh Duffy died after being engulfed in flaming alcohol in the cistern room. Seven workers were in the building. three burned severely and two escaped by leaping through a window. Two firemen were injured as flames were brought under control after four alarms.
Marion Criswell a 30 year old rigger of 751 West Court Street is in critical condition at General Hospital after being struck in the head with a brick by a man in a car outside Thelma Restaurant 712 Freeman Avenue. Ward Baker 22 Charles Baker 29 and Frank Ross 38 are in custody for investigation.
Patrolman Harry Derrick captured a nocturnal owl in Greer Neal's Newport home after a week of scratching noises and eerie laughter. Mrs. Neal believed burglars or a ghost caused the disturbance until Derrick pulled the owl from the chimney.
Count Pierre Marie Raymond de Crouzet Raussac was sentenced to ten years in prison in Toulouse for throwing his seventeen month old illegitimate son into a canal. Convicted on a guilty plea the case drew large crowds with many calling for the death penalty. The defense argued insanity and the Count said he acted like an automaton after losing control.
Police report jewels valued at 25000 stolen from the hotel suite of opera star Mme Marie Rappold in New York as she slept. A case with 15000 more gems was left untouched. her daughter Lillian, 17, also in the tenth floor suite at the Hotel Longwell on West Forty fourth Street.
Maurice Wessel a 17 year old of 3727 Mt Vernon Ave was arrested after calling police to surrender to an attempted hold up in which a caretaker and a man named Forest Parnes were wounded and a victim later died Detectives said Wessel may face first degree murder charges if he fired the first shot The case could make him the first juvenile to be tried for first degree murder in Hamilton County Witnesses will be examined and the grand jury will decide charges
The New York World with The Commercial Tribune will broadcast presidential election returns as ballots are counted on election night November 6 starting at 8 PM. WKRC Cincinnati will join, supplying local district results to the World. The program marks journalism entering radio on a nationwide scale with Columbia and Associated Broadcasters networks aboard.
Cleveland dispatch reports sixteen Ohio fatalities from automobile and grade crossing accidents. Five killed in a Madison Avenue crash in Cleveland as Copeland falls from a truck and dies in the collision.
