A railroad train plunged from a bridge into water at Atlantic City. About 80 people drowned. Special dispatch notes a maritime disaster on the Atlantic coast with numerous casualties.
Miss Nettle Brown aged 25 said to be daughter of D C Brown of Lincoln Nebraska committed death by own action today at the Catholic Cathedral by taking carbolic acid. She arrived in Kansas City about three weeks ago and stayed at two hotels before attending services and dying in a pew after the congregation left.
Andrew Carnegie returning from Europe on the Celtic with wife and daughter spoke on reform spelling. He expects the English and American branches of the Reform Spelling Association to meet in conference with delegates from Canada and Australia. He believes spelling reforms are inevitable and credited President Roosevelt with advancing the cause more than philologists in twenty years.
Philadelphia report says Clayton B. French, son of H. B. French, was mortally wounded by W G Audenried at the Montgomery Inn Bryn Mawr after attempting entry through a window when his key failed. French aimed to reach Audenried’s room and was shot during the attempt.
Victoria Taczkow, a corset model, told a coworker she planned to marry soon and take a honeymoon. Friends say Hampton, an assistant secretary, loved her deeply and despair over the loss led him to shoot her at Hotel Griffon before killing himself.
A natural gas blast in Coffeyville Kansas killed Jess Ross and Mrs J E McDaniel and seriously injured C J Clossen Cotton Ray and Mrs Pearl Keeler and her 3 year old son. Twenty others were injured as five brick buildings housing a real estate office stores and a restaurant collapsed. A fire started but was put out shortly after.
In Hazelton Indiana on October 28 a farmer posse armed with shotguns rifles and bloodhounds tracks vandals believed to have destroyed a corn shredder on Joseph Eliott s farm. Farms in the area report multiple barn and equipment burnings or wreckings fueling farmer unrest and pursuit.
On October 29 near Manila the Pullajanes in Samar attacked supply boats on the Surago River. Three scouts were killed and one wounded. five Pullajanes died. Supplies were saved as troops pursue the attackers.
A six month old embalmed baby was found in a dress suitcase at the Adams Express Company office in Philadelphia. Inspectors say the case has been in possession since July 1 and was sent from Newark New Jersey, addressed to M Jones at 1879 Bainbridge Street a non existent Philadelphia address. Newark authorities are assisting in the investigation.
George W. Allum 60 owner of a large plumbing establishment in Athens Ohio attempted suicide by drinking muriatic acid at 7 p.m. After the act he told his nieces and medical aid was summoned. Despondency over a $500 loss from Anderson Brothers’ failure is given as the cause and recovery is not expected.
Postoffice Inspector Fulton arrested Daniel Woodward a 51 year old railway postal clerk after a six month investigation. A bag searched on his runs contained five pairs of shoes silverware and clothing. He worked on the Frisco line between St Louis and Monet Southwest.
San Francisco officials defend a state law mandating separate schools for Japanese children while noting age and status of many so-called Japanese pupils. Tokyo reports cautious U S action eases tensions and strengthens confidence in President Roosevelt amid the San Francisco school incident.
Clinton C. Clark a 21 year old sailor on the Indiana was arrested after being found sleeping on grass in Riverside Park near a dead unidentified woman. An autopsy showed fatal injuries including broken ribs and shoulder bruises indicating murder. Clark said he had been drinking and could not recall the encounter. He enlisted in Columbus Ohio two years ago.
Lexington, Ky October 28 After thirteen and one half hours deliberation the jury found Daniel M Adams former attendant at the Eastern Kentucky Asylum guilty of assault and battery fixing punishment at one year in jail Frederick Phar who faced the same murder charge received five years in the penitentiary last week W W M Claggett charged with the same crime will be tried tomorrow
Laura Osten of East Orange New Jersey 23 was shot allegedly by Louis R Brown 21 also of East Orange while riding in a cab on Broadway. Brown was arrested after attempting suicide and claimed quarrel over Osten refusing to marry him.
Sir George Henry Lewis acting for the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough says no deed of separation has been signed and the children remain with their father at Blenheim Castle. The statement names the Duke, the Marquis of Blandford, and Lord Ivor Spencer Churchill as present at Blenheim.
A West Jersey & Seashore electric train derailed on the Thoroughfare trestle near Atlantic City sinking in 30 feet of water. About eighty people died or were missing, with hundreds watching from Meadows. Coroner and prosecutor opened inquest into possible negligence while victims include Walter Scott and several Royal Artillery Band members. Rescue efforts saved some, but many were entombed or injured.
