Major McKinley addresses Canton crowds amid cheers for protection. Delegations from West Virginia and Crawford County Ohio join protest as he argues a national tariff policy will restore home markets, preserve currency, and uphold law.
Telegrams from Georgia counties indicate opposition to the idea of Charles R. Crisp, son of ex-Speaker Crisp, filling his father’s seat in the Third District. District political currents show opposition and support swirling as candidates emerge and county voices reach Atlanta.
Deputy Supervisors of the Seventeenth District meet at New Philadelphia and order J B Whitcomb Populist for Congress omitted from ballots or covered by sticker on printed copies. The Coshocton County board weighs carrying out the measure, risking two ballots in one election.
Prominent Buckeye State residents spoke at midday Ohio Day events hosted by the Commercial Travelers Sound Money Club in New York. Capt. A. H. Mattox presided. speakers included Gen. Wager Swayne, Col. F. Grant, Police Commissioner and former US Minister to Austria, Mayor Strong, Gen. Anson G. McCook, and a regret letter from Joseph H. Manley of Augusta Maine.
Ex-Treasurer Legg arrived in Wave of Vancouver accompanied by Sheriff Barnes and was arraigned. Unable to post bail he was remanded to the County Jail as a committee reports a defalcation of 16278 dollars, about 5000 of which is from his first term. Mrs Lee attempted suicide by poison but was treated with a stomach pump.
In Dallas on October 28 Populist H B Ashby revealed an offer by a silver forces agent to pay him $1000 to withdraw and issue a pro silver Democrat address. Ashby accepted $500 cash and $500 promised, then exposed the scheme in a public letter with an affidavit naming the promoter.
Miss Helen Hoyt Sherman married William Ogilvie Griffith at St Pauls Episcopal Church in Des Moines. The ceremony, described as the citys most elaborate, featured a full choir and the bride given away by her father Major Hoyt Sherman. The couple will spend nine months in Europe before settling in Philadelphia.
In Louisville on October 28 Secretary Carlisle was greeted by the largest campaign crowd yet, receiving enthusiastic applause as he defended his positions against free coinage and urged Kentucky friends to oppose the Chicago ticket without naming any national candidates.
Special dispatch from Youngstown Ohio reports three blast furnaces now operating with a fourth, the Hannah, to be lit next week. It is expected that within thirty days all Mahoning furnaces will be in blast and owners assert McKinley will be elected.
Chicago Oct. 28 W M Hoyt of W M Hoyt & Co importers and wholesale grocers gave to Mr Bryan a house and two Lincoln Neb lands instead of cash for the campaign fund. Bryan handed the deed to Chairman Jones to sell and fund the Democratic campaign. The property is valued around 15000.
Simla report says the famine outlook is increasingly gloomy with unlikely rainfall. Prospects worsen in the northwest central provinces and the Punjab as Bombay prices rise and large foreign grain imports are anticipated.
Braddock October 2 The Edgar Thompson Steel Works, idle for ten days, will reopen in all departments tomorrow and employ about 2,000 workers. The move ends a shutdown that affected the plant and surrounding community.
In Tiffin Ohio on October 28 the Foraker campaign rally and Republican procession drew about 900 marchers and 800 from Fostoria. Senator Foraker spoke from Empire House veranda and again at Noble’s Opera House before 2000 in Defiance, amid decorations, fireworks, and strong pro McKinley sentiment despite a Bryan visit earlier in the day.
Wilson Mullins, a Virginia farmer missing from Hobbs Wise County for five days, was located in a Cumberland Mountain cave by a search party. He had lived on acorns chestnuts and herbs and was later committed to the Southampton Insane Asylum in Marion Virginia.
At St. Henry near Fort Recovery Ohio Democrats interrupted a Republican address by entering the room and shouting for Bryan. The mob fled after Republicans intervened, but then stoned the building.
John Piotrowski of West Hammond Illinois killed himself on his doorstep after years of harassment from ex strikers who had once threatened his life during the Debs strike era. He had served eight years in the Fifteenth Infantry and was previously involved in guarding the Michigan Central Railroad bridge at Kensington.
In Minneapolis on October 28 Dr. E. T. Gibson a free silver supporter hung a British flag with the caption By consent of England under a small American flag. A mob gathered in front of his office and pulled down and destroyed the English flag with a rope, amid veteran onlookers.
In Louisville on October 28 Carlisle will not vote next Tuesday though eligible by law. He spent the last two days in Louisville and with this the supplementary registration ends he loses his vote.
In Dale Floyd County Kentucky last night John Frazier tried to elope with William Reynolds daughter. Reynolds fathered by William Reynolds shot Frazier and Frazier fired twice wounding Reynolds both men badly hurt and hospitalized.
Richmond Kentucky October 28 The six year old daughter of James McCoy died after a short illness caused by eating peach seed kernels.
Warren County Republicans plan a mass meeting at Mason while a Tri County Rally is set for Loveland. Fifty thousand marchers were expected in the Saturday parade with Ivorydale’s final rally described as the county’s largest this campaign. Senator Foraker spoke across Northern Ohio with rumors of canceled engagements.
A special train bringing Republican speakers to Montgomery meets a hostile crowd of Bryan supporters. The mob jeers and yells while Patterson tries to speak, Mrs. Hall is attacked as flags and literature are torn away, and Democrats urge restraint amid widespread reports of similar incidents at other points.
Harris Franklin of Deadwood South Dakota, partner of Samuel Allerton, travels to Chicago and places large wagers on McKinley. He has $20,000 tied to the election and is ready to bet more. He bets $5,000 to $50,000 against McKinley carrying Ohio and $2,500 against $1,500 that McKinley will win the presidency. He predicts McKinley will win Illinois by about 40,000 and possibly carry South Dakota.
Rosa Kearse testifies she and her husband were whipped by six men at Broxton Bridge, while J. J. Folk identifies Isham Kearse and others as plotters. Rosa details dragging victims behind buggies and stripping in a swamp, leading to her husband’s death and his mother’s collapse.
On October 28 in New York a few notable election wagers appeared on the Stock Exchange. B F Tilghman laid $1000 to $250 for McKinley with a Toby Kirk customer and $4000 to $1000 with a Chicago house client. He placed $5000 more but refused to name the counterparty.
Thirteen year old Bessie Osborne of Avalon woke at 4 AM to light a gas stove. A leaking gas ignited the blaze, she dragged 9 year old Dale and 6 year old Edith to safety before succumbing to burns, saying God woke her to save them.
Illinois has a solid Republican delegation in the Fifty-fourth Congress but fusion in some districts may cost a few seats. Chicago districts are safe for sound money while southern races narrow the GOP margin. State House gains are hoped for with a strong Republican working majority anticipated.
Democrats near Lawrenceville stoned a Republican gathering addressed by Congressman candidate Walter L. Weaver and Carl K. Mower in Springfield Ohio October 28. A brick shattered a wagon, striking Squire W A Stout in the ear and knocking a cigar from Pierce Rapp. John Wissinger was struck by a stone.
United States Senator Don Caffery and R H Farrar spoke at a Lake Charles rally for sound money. A mob of free silver supporters gathered at the courthouse and hotel, hurling threats and stones, forcing the speakers to retreat after a tense two hour confrontation.
A tornado formed at 6:45 PM 100 miles southwest of Sherman, tearing through Squirrel Creek Bottom and striking the Duke and Farris farms near Howe. Hayes family occupants were injured, possibly fatally, as homes were destroyed and a cloud burst followed. City search parties and physicians aided survivors, with many residents gathering as night fell.
The Republican March Around Jericho in Fayette County drew a large crowd as a mile long cavalcade stopped at West Lancaster, Pleasant View, Edgefield, Allentown and Milledgeville with speakers including A C Patton and John N Vandeman. 1000 Republicans greeted the march upon its return with decorated vehicles and cannon fire. Attorney George W Allen, a lifelong Democrat, participated.
Four men Tom Duross Geo Billings Patsey Moore and J Fitzgibbons escaped the county jail by leaping from a second story window after breaking a lock. Authorities and citizens pursued them and soon recaptured the quartet amid crowded conditions in the jail corridor.

East Liverpool O Oct 28 A compromise was reached between the Salineville striking coal miners and operators ending a six month stoppage. About 700 miners walked out February 6 after a wage dispute over pay and working hours. The settlement sets wages and conditions for a return to work.
Six prisoners at Edmonson County Jail escaped by sawing through the ceiling and breaking a back door on the second story in Brownsville Kentucky. The escapees were Charles Page J M Madison Charles Bales Luther Cave J M Sanderson and Redemption Anion all unrecaptured.
A special Pittsburg & Lake Erie train carrying the Americus Club from Pittsburg to Cleveland broke the Pittsburg Youngstown record by covering sixty eight miles in seventy four minutes despite wet rails.
In Louisville on October 28 Judge Barr issued a rule against Jailer Watts requiring him to appear in United States Court next Saturday to show cause why he should not be punished for allowing U S prisoners to escape from his custody.
Stockton California at Oct 283 Thomas B Reed accompanied by his daughter arrived this afternoon from Los Angeles. In his earlier years Mr Reed resided in Jockton and taught school here. This is his first visit to his former home.
Wm Burke Township Trustee and farmer was held up on Akron outskirts last night and robbed of 50 dollars and his revolver carried for protection. Police search underway for suspects with report of highwaymen involved in the incident.
Consul General to Havana General Fitzhugh Lee announced he will sail for New York on Saturday to visit his family and handle private business. He said the trip is for personal matters.
In Columbus on October 23, Mary G. Anderson filed a foreign divorce against Albert Jameson Anderson known as Burglar Jim Anderson. They wed February 27, 1882, have four children, the youngest under ten, and she seeks divorce and custody. Attorneys report processes sent to Anderson are returned not found.
Daniel V Bennett founder of the first newspaper in Piqua Ohio died at his Brooklyn home aged 79 He had kept the Barnard House in Cincinnati where he met Abraham Lincoln Governor O P Morton and Allen G Thurman He moved to the East in 1865 and later worked at the Treasury Department in Washington.
In Galesville Wisconsin an 18 year old hired man named Palmer killed Oscar Marshall's eight year old son. After a quarrel Palmer took the boy to a barn and crushed his skull with an axe. He later confessed after attempting suicide. Lynching fear grips the community.
Chauncey Foster and L. J. Hanchett, Metropolitan Business College students, were arrested for egg throwing at W. J. Bryan and Mrs. Bryan during a parade. They confessed to the act and were released after a letter from Bryan urged their release as a lesson to others. Police plan to proceed if needed.
Mrs. Cleveland and a friend rode in a carriage drawn by two horses that bolted near the Treasury Building. The chestnut horse fell after a derrick scare, but a footman freed it. the pair then bolted off, coachman Beckett halting the runaway before harm occurred.

H C Cockrell convicted in U S District Court of using the mails for fraud. He received eighteen months in Jeffersonville Penitentiary and a $500 fine. He ran a Lebanon general store and used worthless checks to obtain goods sent by mail. Victims included merchants in Louisville Cincinnati St Louis and Chicago.
Immigrant officials order release of 274 Armenian refugees at Ellis Island avoiding labor market congestion. Treasury directs even distribution on proper bonds. W C T A Salvation Army and Lady Henry Somerset to furnish bonds. None to be deported.
Charles Kaiser Jr and his wife Emma were stopped by highwaymen on a lonely road near Norristown Pennsylvania. Mrs Kaiser was shot through the head and killed instantly and Mr Kaiser was wounded. The robbers seized a quantity of money and valuables and fled. Emma Kaiser was years old.
London on October 28 reported bread prices up a half penny per loaf. The increase weighs on poorer districts where many families have cut their bread supplies to cope with the higher cost of living.
Hon. F. B. Spiegel of Cincinnati spoke to about three thousand people in the McKinley and Hobart tent in Toledo during an evening address.
New York reports Congressman Paul J. Sorg of Ohio's Third District arrived today aboard the steamship Teutonic from Liverpool.
Berlin reports condemn Prince Bismarck for disclosing a secret treaty with Russia until 1890 that would guarantee Russia’s neutrality in a war with France. Critics say his indiscreet statements tarnish his reputation as he clashes with successor Count von Caprivi. The Reichsanzeiger defends state secrets and refuses to clarify or correct the claims.
In Paris on October 28 conservative papers Figaro and Gaulois attack Prince Bismarck over Hamburg Nachrichten disclosures on Russo German ties. They say his fall stemmed from failed grasp of evolving European balance and warn that secrets may undermine the Triple Alliance and Austria Hungary’s position.
Berlin reports the German government is deeply irritated by Hamburger Nachrichten claims of a Russia German defensive alliance during the years when Prince Bismarck served. It says it may prosecute the newspaper and those behind it, including the former chancellor.
In Fair Haven a Republican parade was attacked as a revolver fired wounding a Young Men’s Republican Club member in the arm. Stones and bricks flew in another section, striking ex-Councilman I Atwater of the New Haven Gold Legion, leaving him with a severe head cut and unconscious. Sections broke ranks and fled the assailants.
