A devastating Philadelphia blaze in the Market Street area kills eighteen people and injures many more. Fire officials describe a rapid combust ion in the Hunt Wilkinson building and adjacent shops, with several victims leaping from upper floors and others perishing inside.
Alonzo J. Whiteman once a Minnesota senator and millionaire stood before Judge Bell at Boston on the witness stand admitting years of opium and morphine use while pleading for mercy. He pleaded guilty to larceny of 480 dollars after being indicted for forgery as his aged mother from Kentucky urged leniency.
John Baker of Flora Indiana recently wed Miss Jennie Baker and notes this is his sixth marriage in five years. All former wives live nearby and pass him on the streets. Baker says harmony defeats quarrels and plans to continue marrying until his life ends, with an estimated four dozen wives if he lasts that long.
The Giddings Republican Club banquet at Park Hotel opened the local campaign with speakers including Senator Mason of Illinois and W. C. Thomas. Mason endorsed Roosevelt on Booker T. Washington and declared Foraker a logical 1904 GOP nominee, predicting a tariff issue and a large Republican victory with Foraker as standard bearer. Mason forecast his Senate re election.
About 7000 people hear Senators Hanna of Ohio and Burrows of Michigan at the Auditorium. The Young Men's Republican Club sponsors the meeting where registration is urged for tomorrow's last chance. Hanna warns against overconfidence while Burrows urges Ohioans to qualify to vote and back the McKinley Roosevelt policy.

Washington rumors say Rear Admiral Crowninshield will be relieved from the Naviga tion Bureau and reassigned to a squadron with Sampson Cromwell and Howell seeking retirement around December 1. The plan could include Admiral Dewey representing the navy at King Edward VII’s coronation while others step into new posts.

Theodore Stern, president of Louisville Board of Aldermen, arrived in Washington to ask President Roosevelt for appointment as Collector of Internal Revenue, claiming Louisville support. Kentucky picks will wait until after the election, the President said.
