News from Ladysmith reports Boer artillery shelling Dundee and the former British camp while British troops occupy an entrenched position. The bombardment at long range yields ineffective shells. Communication with Dundee is cut. Boer wounded and prisoners arrive. General Ben Viljoen is wounded and captured.
London dispatches report censorship in wartime Britain remains tight as General Yule joins General White and retreats from Ladysmith. Questions persist about haste and disorder, missing officers, and concealed losses at Glencoe while Buller may arrive with fresh reinforcements ahead of a looming battle.
War Office report lists killed and wounded among regiments including First Gloucester Second Battery and Fifty third Battery with multiple lieutenants. Total casualties show 13 killed 98 wounded 3 missing. Prisoners reported among Eighteenth Hussars Dublin Fusileers and others.

In Manila dispatch dated October 25, reports thirty hours of rain swelling the river at San Isi dro. Native cascoes ferry supplies to the stranded area while the returning columns are in good health.
Washington on October 25 reports orders will soon direct Captain Crozier of the Ordnance Department to move to the Philippines. Instructions are not yet issued, but his dispatch follows a shortage of Ordnance Officers in Luzon prompting the decision.
Great Northern defeats efforts to incorporate Hillyard near Spokane. The town, owned by the railroad, bans liquor sales and opposed saloon entry. outside residents sought incorporation to gain saloon access, but the move failed.
At Sevastopol a huge system of graft is unearthed with forty three government officials arrested. Accused include top naval officers and the former senior port official Commander Reitsky. Several accused reportedly killed themselves to avoid trial as Vice Admiral Tyrtoff orders court martial proceedings.
The house in Rhode Island avenue, bought for Admiral Dewey by popular subscription, was formally turned over today by Assistant Secretary Vanderlip and United States Treasurer Roberts. The deed was filed for record and the purchase price, about $50,000, was completed with two subscriptions totaling $1,275 from Brooklyn and the Western Union Telegraph Company.
Queenstown Oct 2 The British cruisers Furious Pelorus and Pactolus sailed for Cape Clear to meet eight battleships and two cruisers from the Channel Squadron. The fleet will proceed allegedly to Gibraltar but may enter a Spanish or Portuguese port as they have health bills from those consuls.
General Otis reports transport Grant with Twenty sixth Volunteers and recruits arrived yesterday in Manila. No casualties. Aztec with civilian employees arrived this morning. Seven horses lost. all other assets in good condition.
Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Detective John M. Short was waylaid and beaten by a band of young thugs in Wheeling West Virginia early today. Police say revenge was the motive as no robbery occurred. Short likely will die from injuries.
Senator Depew said after talks with Vanderbilt representatives that the will would not be filed for probate until Friday while an abstract of the document would be released Thursday evening.
In Portsmouth Ohio editor R H Stevenson of the Tribune shot saloon keeper Richard Junge after a published accusation of infidelity. Stevenson pursued Junge after passing his caboon and fired twice, one wound being life threatening. Stevenson surrendered as Junge was taken home amid rising tensions.
The Union Biblical Seminary of Dayton Ohio lost a suit in New Albany Ind against the heirs of John Rollinson to recover two notes of 3500 dollars each. Rollinson, a recluse, was found dead a year ago and the defense argued he was of unsound mind when he signed notes payable one day after death.
Paris reports Generals Giovanneli and Herve dropped from the Council of War and retired after a report by War Minister De Gallifet that they can no longer field. The action shocks military circles amid Esterhazy Deroulede linked scandals and a divorce suit. Herve testified for Deroulede in the Faure funeral insurrection case.
In EBL RONO O 4 Oct 3 a stockman C W Hopkins and Deputy Marshal Fox fought with six shooters in a saloon. Both Hopkins and Fox were killed, Fox having tried to arrest the drunken Hopkins.
