Bond forger Z T Lewis dies after pardon in forgeries

Z T Lewis, once a leading bond forger who forged large numbers of county and school bonds, died in Michigan and was buried in Adams County. He built a loan system using forged bonds as collateral, evaded detection by coupon clipping, and was paroled for health but later died in Ann Arbor.

Chase of a Bond Forger Ends in Parole and Ruin

The death of Z T Lewis near West Union Ohio recalls his eight month pursuit across Ohio West Virginia and Mexico by Detective Ralph Crawford. A banker and bond dealer he forged about 230000 in bonds including Hardie Adams and Tippecanoe counties. Arrested in Ypsilanti he was sentenced to eight years but paroled after less than two due to ill health.
