Storms lash Florida and Central America as the St. Lucie sinks off Elliott Key. Fifty passengers drown from a barge, 25 killed aboard the vessel, and 60 wounded arrive for hospital care. Widespread destruction hits Miami with numerous buildings unroofed and docks wrecked. In San Salvador heavy rains flood valleys for ten days, causing extensive damage and loss of life.
Mrs Elizabeth Free obtained a gubernatorial pardon for her son Otto Free, a Dayton man serving life for a saloon murder, who is dying of tuberculosis. The scene at the Columbus penitentiary hospital moved witnesses and ended with mother and son leaving for Dayton in the warden’s carriage.
Washington Oct 19 Herbert G Squiers former Minister to Cuba is under presidential consideration for appointment as Minister to Panama and it is believed he will be accepted with an announcement soon.
Jackson Norris and his father George Norris were killed in a farm boundary quarrel near Rising Sun Indiana. Joseph Richardson was seriously wounded before Norris fired his revolver and Richardson shot the elder Norris after the scuffle. The sheriff moved to arrest Richardson.
George Rashid, the Syrian leper driven from eastern cities, died of heart failure in a Pickens shanty near Clarksburg W V. The body will be cremated by county authorities. A Baltimore & Ohio Railroad built the shanty and a nurse was provided, later replaced by county and state care.
Findlay Ohio reports jurors convict the Standard Oil Company of Ohio of conspiracy against trade under the Valentine anti trust law. A fine up to 5000 per day or six to twelve months in jail may be imposed. The verdict followed 32 hours of deliberation after a seven day trial with hymns sung during the closing hours. The defense plans a motion for a new trial and appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court.
Mrs. V. F. Helmer reports her husband, who left September 4 for Europe, is in an Austrian prison on desertion charges. He moved around, lost U.S. naturalization papers in Illinois, and was arrested after his father’s burial. An attorney is seeking his release.
Thomas Jordan a 20 year old laborer at United States Pipe Company Addyston fired at his wife after accusing her of infidelity. The 16 year old wife was badly wounded with bullets in the neck and head and remained in critical condition at Betts Street Hospital. Jordan died from self inflicted wounds. Coroner's inquest planned at Addyston.
In Mt. Carbon Jackson County a new school building for colored children is completed but black parents refuse to send their children. They insist their children be allowed to attend the white school, sparking a race dispute in the mining town.
Rome Oct 19 The resignation of Premier Sarrien and the French cabinet reorganization sparked Vatican unease. Officials fear church state clashes will intensify if M Clemenceau takes the Premiership.
There were 61 900 births in Ohio in the year ending June 30 1906 and 31 504 deaths 44 417 marriages compared with 41 212 the prior year. One thousand five hundred three people were naturalized 216 boys and 97 girls sent to industrial schools and 3 072 persons committed to insane asylums this data released by the Secretary of State.
Governor Folk announced in Marshall Missouri that he will grant respites next Monday for Mrs Aggie Myers and Frank Hottman sentenced for the murder of Clarence Myers. The stay allows the U S Supreme Court time to review Mrs Myers case.
Natives of the Doukhala district surprised and attacked the camp of the Shereef Mahalla who has been charged with reestablishing order and tax collection in the provinces. The Shereef suffered heavy losses.
Richmond Virginia October 19 Mrs Jefferson Davis widow of the Confederate president was buried today at Hollywood Cemetery beside her husband in tributes from many Southern states and representatives.
