A Grahamstown refugee says a Johannesburg train carried 300 wounded burghers from Mafeking and Klerksdorp. Ambulances and other conveyances rushed the injured to hospitals, as British patrols clashed at Bester's Station. General Joubert moved his HQ to Dannhausers.
London dispatch reports 2000 Boers attacked a volunteer patrol at Bester's Station. Volunteers, aided by Maxims, held a crucial line as many were exposed with lost kit. Sixteen Boers said killed. Lieutenant Gallwey, son of Sir M H Gallwey, missing and possibly in hiding. Cavalry bivouacked. Joubert moves headquarters to Dannhauser.
Cape Town correspondent says Boers plan a masquerade in British uniforms at Cape Town and Durban by end of October. Report notes another 25 000 pounds of Transvaal gold seized aboard the steamer Avondale Castle at Delagoa Bay.
