William Dutton a veteran circus rider once of World Wide Fame was fatally injured while awaiting a car at Ninth and Sycamore Streets. Reports say he was slugged and robbed by unidentified assailants.
William Dutton famed circus bareback rider was struck on Ninth Street near Sycamore in a suspected robbery attempt. He lies unconscious with a skull fracture as police chase suspects. Mrs. Williams witnessed the assault and a watch and coins were later found at the scene. Dutton has long served with the John Robinson Circus and is a prominent performer and trainer.
Alfred Holbrook a 27 year old law student native of Lebanon Ohio and former University of Tennessee attendee shot himself in his New York City apartment. His father is believed to live in Pittsburg. He had been unemployed for months and had planned to visit his father today in Pittsburg.
Chief Wilkie of the U S Secret Service assumed control of the probe into a reported 61200 shortage in St Louis Subtreasury funds. Subtreasurer Thomas J Akins declined to discuss the matter noting the counting and full audit could take about two weeks to determine if a clerical error or actual shortage exists.
The Army of the Cumberland met in Chattanooga on October 18 and re elected all existing officers except General E A Carman who was chosen Treasurer replacing General Frank C. Smith.
Mrs. Gertrude Sickles 28 shoots herself in Avondale using gas jets she turned on over her head leaving a 6 month old baby in danger. The baby survived and doctors say it will likely recover while the husband and servants frantically aided in efforts to save both mother and child. The coroner cites illness and two years of sorrow after the elder child’s death as factors.
President Roosevelt conferred with Secretary Taft and Assistant Secretary Bacon to review events in Cuba and the island’s finances since intervention. Taft outlined progress toward a fiscal agent, possible banking selection, and Panama planning.
The jury in the Standard Oil Company of Ohio conspiracy trial reports no verdict after a second night of deliberation. If no agreement is reached, a new trial or actions against subsidiary companies may begin by mid November. Deliberations extend about forty eight hours with judges considering discharge if no accord is reached. Attorneys travel between Columbus Cleveland and New York as the case stalls.
A Big Four passenger train struck a touring car at West Main Street crossing in Springfield this morning. W. E. Page of Columbus leaped to help his wife and three year old daughter Paulina escape but the car was hit and hurled thirty feet. Mrs Page is seriously injured with a wrenchd back and cuts, Paulina was uninjured aside from a forehead scratch, and the child walked from the wreck. Page and family were en route to Shelbyville Indiana to visit relatives.
Fort Pierce reports severe storm damage from a hurricane arriving from Miami. About 100 houses destroyed, two churches toppled, the concrete jail tilting with prisoners moved, car sheds down, steamer sheds roof blown off, and a two story brick saloon building collapsed.
Rev. Sam P. Jones evangelist lies in state after funeral at Sam Jones Tabernacle Cartersville with Bishop C M Galloway presiding. Body to be moved to Atlanta and placed in the State Capitol receiving vault until family vault completion in Cartersville.
Secretary Taft announced plans to give several political speeches in the West before the campaign ends. He will finish his itinerary in a day or two and will deliver one speech in Ohio and others in western or northwestern states, with no plans to speak in New York State.
Wireless messages report a severe hurricane moving from Cuba to Florida. Early today the storm neared Havana and then Key West, with extensive damage along the water front and winds around seventy miles an hour near Jupiter as wires went down south of Jupiter.
