In New Whatcom Washington on October 15 a Linden area farmhouse owned by farmer J S Miller burned with six children killed and a man named Frank Bolse seriously burned The cause of the blaze is not known and another occupant survived account notes the disaster struck four miles north of Linden
A panic was narrowly averted at the Detroit Opera House during Hoyt's A Mid Night Bell opening. Digby Bell amused a large crowd when a gallery cheer for Bryan triggered a mistaken fire alarm. Managers Whitney and Harrison calmed the audience and they handed the Bryan shooter to police.
Fourteen detectives from Pinkerton and other agencies converge in Valparaiso Indiana after the Fort Wayne road detains two alleged freight car thieves. The men Barchard and Griffith are identified by investigators with Barchard said to be the sought after “short” man seen in Chicago last summer. A mysterious woman offered to post bail for Griffith.
CHATTANOOGA Tenn Oct 15 Col L S Hatch is jailed charged with grand larceny and breach of trust. Accused of running a Chattanooga Jockey Club race meet and taking all race funds, then fleeing with a horse and buggy under attachment. He was arrested in Memphis. He is the son of an ex congressman Hatch of Missouri.
A St Louis woman identified as Campbell or possibly Mrs J W Steele declares if her Bryan husband votes she will take her children and leave him She signs as atheist and anarchist and invites Mrs Werth to prosecute her for intimidation She lives at 723 Jefferson Avenue and admires Herr Most.
Bellefontaine Ohio October 15 The City Council did not repeal the local option ordinance despite a 650 wet to 35 dry vote from October 5. The police fund is depleted and the last policeman was discharged. Citizens are urged to arm themselves as the council will not hire police. Mayor Wright has funded police pay personally and now advises residents to defend property themselves.
In Bellefontaine Ohio on October 15 farmers report being swindled by men who claim to represent top paint firms. They promise ten gallons of paint for a favorable recommendation, then present a note. Matthew Copeland D Houchins and Jackson Merry received notes for 150 200 and 300 dollars. Houchins struck the visitor, others paid.
The Wooster University student petition to restore intercollegiate athletics was heard by the synod. The faculty was upheld and the synod sustained the report by a two thirds vote. Students paraded the streets showing discontent.
Thomas B. Watson telegraphs that due to a sore throat he cannot fill the four day Kansas engagement starting in Topeka tomorrow. He gives no indication of rescheduling.
Danville Kentucky October 15 J Barnes Caldwell and wife marked their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a family reunion at their home five miles from Danville. They are survived by seven living children.
Evansville report says Bud Haydon won all of James Hays money crops on the steam er Hopkins. Hays demanded a quarter of blood and reached for his knife but Haydon acted first and narrowly escaped injury.
A celebratory event lines the path as prominent generals receive cheers across streets. Officials from the military and city leaders attend the ceremony with marching bands and civilian spectators applauding in the glow of a public show of support.
Oct 15 Louisville report says Generals Alger Howard Sickles and others were greeted with cannon salutes and packed crowds in Jeffersonville and Music Hall Cincinnati. The tour stops drew 2 000 in Jeffersonville and over 4 000 at Music Hall. Speeches praised Union unity, sound money, and veterans while noting Gen. Sigel and Corporal Tanner’s fame. The party planned four days crossing Ohio, reaching Cincinnati early morning.
An unusual four day political tour carries Union Generals, plus Corporal Tanner, from Cincinnati to Columbus via a special train. The procession includes artillery demonstrations, bugle calls, and a large torchlight crowd, with stops in Dayton, Springfield, Xenia, Washington C. Hilli and Circleville.
In Seymour Indiana on October 15 a parade welcomed the Generals party. About 200 farmers rode on horseback in the station procession as Generals Burst Martin Stuart Sickles and Howard led the march. Lucius B Swift addressed the city after the train departure and Robert Brown spoke to a Grand Opera House audience.
Ten thousand people greeted the famous soldiers when their special train arrived at Rushville Indiana at ten o clock. The train's arrival was announced by a field piece on a flat car and speeches followed by Generals Alger Sickles Howard Coral Tanner and others. A large crowd gathered for evening events with Judge U ey Bx speaking.
In Columbus Indiana on October 15 the five generals, including Franz Sigel and D Bic, arrived aboard a flat car to a crowd of about 5 060. General Sigel could not speak due to illness but brief addresses were delivered. Corporal Tanner was among the greetings.
In Centerville Missouri on October 15 a man named John Imen attacked his sister about 15 years old and his ill brother with an axe then killed an elderly man named Jacob Wilhelm on Logan's Creek near Ellington. He was arrested and thought to be deranged.
The Seventieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry held its annual reunion in Ripley Ohio with a grand camp fire at the opera house. Colonel D W C Loudon addressed attendees at the event.
The Ohio Supreme Court heard arguments on the Dana law's validity. Cincinnati Bar Association representatives included Kittredge Wellington and Black, with the County Board of Elections led by Bode and Bendigs. State Election Supervisor Taylor was represented by Richards. Decision expected within twenty days of the hearing prior to ballot printing.
In Saint Louis on October 15 a relic of a laborer Thomas Whalen, who died May 29 at Alexian Brothers Hospital, is a ragged coat that hid a Boatmen's Bank deposit of 4800. The coat has since passed to employer Fritz Nau and the funds were given to the public administrator. Whalen rests in the potter's field.
Eighteen women and two men were arrested by Central Police detectives at the Ricardo Hotel pool room in Chicago for being poolroom patrons. The group, mainly middle class wives and artisans, faced detention at Harrison Street Station after a confrontation sparked by a manager’s refusal to admit a mulatto woman who then alerted authorities. Some detainees walked to the station. an elder woman requested not to ride in the patrol wagon.
Charles J. Singer a Chicago real estate dealer traveled from Paris to register on Tuesday as a Democrat supporting McKinley. After the election he will return to France to resume a tour of Europe.
Sarah H Carter as administratrix of W S Carter's estate sues the City of Zanesville for 5000 in the Ohio Supreme Court claiming cemetery trustees disinterred and mishandled the remains around 1862. The disturbance mixed Carter's ashes with others making identification impossible. The plaintiff appeals a loss in a lower court.
A Republican State Committee meeting in Chicago reports McKinley poised for a 200000 plurality statewide with Cook County contributing about half. County poll shows a 96200 Republican majority in Chicago, while northern counties could push the rest of the state to a 100000 advantage.
Four burglars entered Mrs. R. L. Atchinson store in Mogadore at dawn. Six men waited outside as shots were fired when the thieves emerged. A robber was hit by buckshot in the arm, and the group escaped in a wagon with little of the loot.
Alleged Irish-American dynamiter P J P Tynan was released unconditionally from prison in Boulogne sur Mer on October 15 and may remain in France if he wishes.
In Stanford Kentucky today George Renac died after a hunting accident during a hunt when his double barreled shotgun discharged. He passed away about an hour later at the scene or nearby facility.

In Colorado Springs today the International Typographical Union re elected President W P Prescott and officers for the coming year. Rev. John W. Milam and his wife Ida were both declared insane this morning in Indianapolis. Milam, a pastor, is in his years and has an invalid wife at home whom he believes can see lights and objects, while the symptoms in both cases are similar.
George E. Plumb, a non union Brown Works worker shot during riots last summer in Cleveland, sues the County Commissioners for 1000 damages under the Smith anti lynching law granting recovery from counties where mobs act.
John P. Donahoe of Wilmington Delaware defeated General J M Paver of Indianapolis 204 to 174 to win the post of Commander of the Union Veteran Legion. Other office results were delayed until tomorrow as the group voted to meet in Columbus Ohio next year.
A government official, after a conference with President Cleveland, states the President is certain McKinley will be elected. The official notes ongoing campaign efforts by friends of sound money and that Cleveland plans not to vote this fall, without giving a reason.

Mrs Lillie Jerome wife of Harry Jerome of New York files for divorce in San Francisco claiming husband failed to provide. Jerome is described as a cousin of Randolph Churchill.

In Chillicothe Ohio on October 15 188? Benjamin Kingston age 80 hanged himself after his young sweetheart died two weeks earlier. The bereaved elderly man trusted his life to sorrow over the tragedy, making life a burden.
A Cincinnati delegation traveled to view Chicago’s drainage canal amid mixed reception as Mayor Caldwell and Mr. Herrmann skipped the trip. Herrmann was elected president of the society, with Obvious officers named and Nashville invited for next year’s convention.
