George Mayhew, 68, caretaker of the Rixey and Bressier station at 1803 Reading Road, is shot dead during a pistol fight with two young robbers. He had previously repelled an earlier robbery, saving his employer’s receipts of $112 in his pocket at General Hospital.
Herbert Hoover headed to Massachusetts to bolster his presidential bid. He departed Washington on a special train at 11 o clock p m, aiming to win over the Bay State’s electoral votes, a region Democrats claim and Republicans worry about, with a Boston visit planned for tomorrow.
In Chicago dated report two Hip Sing Tong members were killed by rival tong members who fled within hours after a third member was slain near the On Leong Districts Chinese Opera House. Police suspect inter faction clashes as the motive and note tensions in the Hip Sing quarter.
George P. Converse of a wealthy New York family was free to marry Anita Stewart after a Santa Barbara divorce, but Stewart’s status is tied to California court rulings. The interlocutory divorce decree in Los Angeles from Rudolph Cameron becomes final July 4, 1929, and Ellen Stewart’s cross-complaint notes his Hollywood ties and alleged other company.
More than 35 000 men and boys of the Holy Name Society marched through the city to Redland Field. An improvised altar at the ball ground reminded the vast crowd of solemnity. The couple had planned to leave for Carnegie Pennsylvania at midnight. The arrest was conducted during the reception with a wrapped box presented as a gift.
Police doubled guard in Chinatown after a dawn shooting left Wong Chu dead and Wong Wai wounded. The assailant fled after firing four times as the victims played Mah Jong with eleven others. Police suspect a tong feud and identified the dead man as Hip Sing Tong member Wong Chu.
Lin Sing a 72 year old Boston naturalized citizen and On Leong Tong member was shot three times by two masked men in Philadelphia. Police detained 32 suspected Hip Sing Tong members as tensions flare in the long running tong feud. Taxicab drivers reported transporting several Chinese to the Pennsylvania Railroad station with hints of travel to Chicago.
One Chinese man is dead and three others wounded after an apparent tong warfare burst in a Chinese store on Pennsylvania Avenue near the Capitol in Washington. Police and investigators probe the early incident, with more details expected on the fourth page.
Dayton October 14 Two men in a home built airplane were killed when their craft struck a smokestack at the Frigidaire plant in Moraine City and crashed to the ground. Pilot Casten A Roepken 36 and passenger H D Rice 34, neighbors, had flown the ship despite warnings. The plane used an obsolete French motor and Roepken had invited Rice on the flight.
Ray Ott a 19 year old student aviator from Prophets Town Illinois was killed when his swallow bi plane burst into flames at about 1000 feet and crashed at a Cicero street intersection. Ott had 35 hours of solo flight learning at Municipal Airport and apparently was not troubled before the tail spin. His body was burned beyond recognition.
Mrs Phoebe Omlie, Memphis aviatrix and sole woman pilot in this year’s Ford reliability air tour, and E Z Newsome Jr of Paragould were seriously injured when their mono coupe crashed from about 250 feet near Paragould Arkansas. Omlie suffered broken legs while Newsome sustained internal injuries as he rode in the plane which veered right and nosedived after flipping.
New York report quotes Senator George M. Moses accusing Gov. Smith of inconsistency in Louisville. He blasts the tariff program as unfulfillable and says the Democratic nominee would tilt toward an advisory tariff commission and frequent revisions. Moses questions Smiths principles and loyalty to party platform.
A Buffalo patrolman was shot five times and three mail guards were wounded as three bandits attacked a taxicab carrying registered mail between railroad trains. The bandits fled in a sedan after the midnight assault on Elk street near Chicago street.
Powerful Indian rulers travel to London for diplomatic talks amid discussions of a potential United States of India. The meeting highlights the 700,000 square mile Indian states under local monarchs, who acknowledge the king but are not British subjects. Ex-Maharajah of Indore, noted for his romantic escapades, figures in American coverage of the event.
Thousands of motorists stranded on a 20 mile choke point near Lakehurst Naval Air Station faced a second night of delay after the planned Graf Zeppelin visit. Roads to Lakewood and Trenton were jammed, food supplies dwindled, and many slept in stalled cars while a parade of traffic streamed toward New York from Atlantic City.

Harry Dix, 24, of Roanoke Virginia, collapsed from starvation near the Strand Theatre after arriving in New York last Wednesday to find work. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital's starvation ward where a liquid diet was started. Locals and police aided him as he explained he had eaten only one meal since his arrival.
The Graf Zeppelin flew low over Bermuda at 6 41 p m Hamilton time riding a 20 to 25 mph northwest wind. Sightings began at 6 35 p m as it moved east to west above the north shore at about 1500 feet while fog and clouds reduced visibility for residents.
Edward P. Warner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, said no orders exist to use the Patoka for Graf Zeppelin rescue or open sea moorings. He noted the Patoka is not a rescue ship, but its mast could support moorings for the airship. Officials stressed no new information beyond what had been released.
