In St Joseph Missouri on October 13 William Coates 18 was found guilty of murdering his mother Eliza Coates three months earlier. He admitted choking her to death while seeking possession of her property and hoped to be caught to gain the estate.
In Chicago at the College of Physicians and Surgeons an audience witnessed Prof Adolfo Lorenz perform seven congenital dislocation of the hip operations in one day, a clinic described as the largest ever held in Chicago and perhaps in America. His fee in Lolita Armour case was $109000 but today it was nothing. Dr Friedrich Mueller assisted as the pair moved through patient after patient under chloroform amid audible astonishment.
