Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University, opened the International Law Institute sessions at Briarcliff Manor. Elihu Root presided as Butler saluted Gustav Stresemann, Aristide Briand, Premier MacDonald, and President Hoover as key figures shaping postwar understanding and future talks.
Charles A. Lindbergh landed at 6 12 p m in Miami completing a twenty day Caribbean inspection flight. He explored ancient Mayan cities with Dr A V Kidder of the Carnegie Institution and W I Van Deusen of Pan American Airways. The couple planned to proceed to New York while Kidder departed for Washington.
The second day registration in the Thirteenth Ward, Bond Hill, totalled 5 641, far above 1927’s 2 437. Women voters alone accounted for 23 330 of the 71 256 total, beating 1927 figures. Across 26 precincts, only six wards fell short of 1927 registrations.
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh and party left Cozumel Island heading toward Quintana Roo on the final day of a three week Caribbean air tour. The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied Bert B. Buckley former State Treasurer a rehearing on his conspiracy conviction to violate the national prohibition act. It granted thirty days to file a Supreme Court appeal. Buckley was sentenced to two and a half years in the Atlanta Penitentiary for trying to protect the Jackson Brewery from enforcement and to bribe prohibition agent John Eckhart in Columbus.
In Portsmouth Ohio on October 10, ministers led by Rev. Arthur Staples failed to oust Judge William R. Sprague. Judge Will P. Stephenson overruled the petition for a new trial finding Sprague had properly enforced Sunday movie laws. Movie operators have been fined weekly under city ordinance. Impeachment efforts by ministers claimed stronger state penalties should apply.
Oklahoma City dispatch reports a high explosive charge set by M. M. Kinley from Tulsa stopped a blaze at Sinclair Oil and Gas No. 3 stamper well in the South Oklahoma City field. The 50,000,000-foot gasser had sent a 150-foot flame aloft since Tuesday, ending shortly after noon.
Harmon G. Atwater implicated seven individuals in Cleveland's $50,000 playground site purchase scandal, alleging graft totals of $83,250. He named six others, including Councilman Herman H. Finkle, and raised questions about City Manager William R. Hopkins while denying Hopkins was involved in prior meetings.

Gulfport Miss Oct 10 A mammoth devil fish dragged Lieut Gov Bidwell Adams and his skiff eight miles into the Gulf of Mexico before he cut the line and was rescued by a passing yacht. The monster struck the tarpon line in mid afternoon and the two fought it until dark. It was as big as a house eighteen or twenty feet broad.
