The Arctic steamer Frithjof, which accompanied the Wellman Chicago Record-Herald expedition to Spitzbergen, was lost off Cape Langenes Iceland on October 5. The captain and fifteen crew members drowned, the engineer clung to a plank and drifted ashore. Damaged by ice the Frithjof could not withstand a storm while nearing Norway.
