A Vanderbilt family friend predicts Cornelius Vanderbilt will mirror his father William H. Vanderbilt in the will. Mrs. Vanderbilt would receive the Fifth Avenue residence and The Breakers at Newport for life with a 500000 dollar annual income to maintain them. The five children would get 10000000 dollars each, with the remainder split between Cornelius and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt. The estate would become a trust for a term of years.
John Hays of Ashtabula is credited with discovering copper in America and shipping Cleveland’s first coal car. He helped establish a copper smelting works in Pittsburg in 1848 and early mines at Copper Harbor and Eagle River. He is connected to Senator Hanna and McKinley’s grandfather. He is ill in Cleveland.
A musical festival in honor of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and her mother the Queen Dowager was held in the new palace this afternoon. Attending were Sir Frank C. Lascelles British Ambassador Andrew White American Ambassador General Benjamin Harrison and Mrs Harrison.
A clash outside Manila saw Filipino insurgents attack American troops for about an hour. U.S. forces responded with artillery, dispersing the attackers and maintaining control of the area.
A body of insurgents appeared near La Loma church four miles from central Manila and opened fire on American troops. The Twenty-fifth Infantry fired from trenches at 1200 yards, then used artillery as the fight lasted about an hour. One American was wounded. Scouts from the Twentieth Infantry conducted a recon patrol.
General Schwan leading the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Infantry with cavalry and artillery pushed toward San Francisco de Malabon. The enemy, about 5,000 strong in Cavite, retreated with light resistance as the American camp drew within sight. Provisions moved to Rosario as white flags filled the coast town and hundreds of Filipino prisoners were taken.
An American expedition including the gunboats Callao Manila an armored flatboat and steam pump sails from Cavite to the Pasig Betis river to raise the sunken Spanish river gunboat Ayat reported to be in good condition. Helfa with marines from Baltimore precedes to sound the river mouth.
Ex-state senator C. J. Bronston criticized Goebel's tactics in a public letter to J. C. S. Blackburn, calling for loyalty and denouncing treachery. The letter stirred a political furor as anti-Goebel groups gathered at the Opera House to hear Theo Hallam advocate the Brown ticket.
General Otis released to the War Department a report on yesterday’s fighting. Schwan led 1726 infantry plus cavalry and artillery from Bacoor to Noveleta and Rosario, driving the enemy after heavy resistance and capturing two guns with several casualties including Captain Safford killed and Captain McGrath wounded.
A War Department cablegram from General Otis says the transport Indiana sailed from Manila carrying 43 officers and 619 men of the Tennessee regiment. The regiment left no sick aboard. The Indiana also brings 100 general prisoners.
General Otis lists casualties since the last report with dates ranging September 29 to October 6 across multiple infantry units. Notable entries include Corporal Joseph M Tallis and J J Hellinger among others, plus accidental drownings and a gunshot wound in action. The list also notes illnesses such as measles typhoid fever malaria and neuritis affecting several soldiers.
Washington reports General Otis ended Manila press censorship on September 9, nearly a month earlier, ending restrictive controls as of October 9.

Cairo reports the collapse of nine columns in the great hypostyle hall of the temple of El Karnak in Thebes. The hall 170 feet by 329 feet originally held 134 columns up to nearly 70 feet tall and 12 feet in diameter. Built by Zetee I and continued under Rameses II, it features sculptures of the two pharaohs offering to the gods.
Dr Rafael Zaldivar Salvadoran minister to Mexico and Simon Asboleda arrive in San Francisco describing a shift after General Regaldo's presidency. Covington penitentiary guard Pat Mc Inerney was arraigned in City Court and discharged after ex-Detective Charles Noonan refused to prosecute. The shooting stemmed from a political argument. Noonan struck McInerney with a cane, and was later shot in the shoulder, from which he has recovered.
