A Columbus meeting launches the Business Men’s Republican League of Columbus with 400 signers. The group pledges aid to Republican state and county committees and urges business leaders to unite for sound currency and renewal of prosperity amid Ohio and national political campaigns.
In Chicago a gas deal may give Eastern capitalists control of two independent firms, aside from the trust. Legislation consolidated all gas companies except Mutual Fuel and Universal, yielding 14 million feet daily for independents and 17 million for the consolidated works..Standard Oil interests reportedly back a 6 million dollar bid, with Gas McMillan linked to the syndicate.
Mrs Wm J Work awoke to find her husband dead in their berth aboard the Chicago and Erie train nearing Dearborn Station. A physician on the car said he had been dead for hours. The couple had spent the summer in New London Conn seeking relief from a lung ailment and traveled from Mansfield Ohio to Chicago overnight.
Charles Case, secretary of the Ohio Republican League, reports letters from officers of the Mark Hanna Old Soldiers Club at the Dayton home claiming Governor Thomas ordered the club to disband and surrender its charter. The club, with about six thousand members, meets off home grounds. Case vows to pursue a remedy to counter the order and keep the organization active.
James Lennox, a leading Black resident of Chillicothe, says the so called Negro Protective Party in Columbus was a Democratic scheme. He claims Horner Armstead and others aimed to form a Democratic club but were steered by state Democratic leaders into creating the party. Lennox cites meetings with Columbus Democrats and notes Republican Massie reported most petition signers are active Democrats.
In New Orleans on October 6 the Board of Health reported a record day with about 250 fever patients under care and 5 deaths. The tally for the twenty-four hour period shows 46 new yellow fever cases and 5 deaths, with 425 total cases and 48 deaths to date.
Yellow fever cases in Mobile reached 100 today with noon totals at 99 and eighteen deaths since outbreak began. Four new cases are listed Charles Eastburn Sister Cen erosa Mary McDonald K Smith and all patients reside in the old infected district. Relief work advances with rapid aid to destitute families and affected households.
Edward A. Ruppert, chief clerk in the Queen and Crescent office at New Orleans, who deserted his wife and baby while his mother-in-law lay ill, has passed quarantine and arrived in Kentucky. He visited an aunt of his wife near Nicholasville, took supper there, and news then arrived that his wife was dying of yellow fever.
A letter to Mr. W. T. Sullivan from H. L. Guion of Memphis denies a Louisville party claim of yellow fever in Memphis. Guion cites Mayor Clapp as confirming the city is free from disease and emphasizes Memphis is clean and well quarantined as residents return from summer trips.
Democrats controlled registration in Nicholasville Kentucky as Republicans were kept from the booth. In Precinct No several voters were barred and the Democrat majority rose from thirty seven to forty in a single precinct amid claims of magistrate favoritism and partisan conduct by election officers.
A fire at the State Industrial School in Plankinton doomed seven girls to death and left twenty five others to flee. Victims include Nellie Johnston of Grafton and Mabel Fobert of Sioux Falls. total loss estimated at $25,000. Fire origin undetermined, likely lamp explosion. Bodies recovered and buried by late afternoon.
In Parkersburg West Virginia the temperature dropped to 2 degrees on Monday night forming ice about an eighth of an inch thick. Inland areas reported eight degrees colder with much heavier ice.
A blaze at the Dexter Park Pavilion in Chicago’s Union Stockyards spread through the area from 3 to 5 PM, destroying frame business houses and residences between Halsted and Union avenues and Forty third to Forty fifth streets. Damage to the pavilion exceeds 50 000 dollars and the number of horses lost is not yet known. Several workers were injured, including Patrick from stockyards and Firemen Maloney and Walsh. a 4 year old child reportedly perished in the blaze.
Camden Sommers described discovering forged receipts alleged to be written in Judge Camden's name by Mrs. Atkinson. Owens correspondence showed nonpayment, while defense admitted the receipts are in Atkinson's handwriting. Night session held as trial resumes with further State and defense witnesses.
Urbana Ohio grand jury ends three day session with five indictments returned but not released as the indicted individuals are not under arrest. Twenty one witnesses testified and evidence failed to warrant indictments.
Charles Miller of Chicago died after being run over by a freight train at Air Line Junction in Toledo. He was en route to visit a brother in the area and had not seen him since the World’s Fair encounter.
Marion Indiana William White, who failed six months ago for 100000 dollars, was indicted by the grand jury for obtaining money on false credits.
Toledo dispatch says a Silver Republican meeting was arranged in Columbus to back General Warner for the Senate. The move was driven by McLean faction Democrats and aimed to mislead on the McLean candidacy. Objections arose when allies warned Warner would be used as a paw. meeting fate remains uncertain. HAL D. Editor W C Brann, claiming no defamation of Baylor women, said trustees and faculty were his targets. Later, J B Scarborough, his son George, and Baylor student R H Hamilton seized Brann in Providence Building, dragged him to the street, and beat him with a cane and buggy whip.
The Trisiaté Ice Manufacturing Association met in Columbus and elected H. Voges as President A. A. Hanley as Vice President W. M. Woodrow as Secretary Treasurer with an executive committee. They aim to standardize ice prices across Ohio West Virginia and Kentucky and to stop retailers from selling ice to brewers owning ice plants or to the State Hospital for Epileptics in Gallipolis.
Three miners were killed in an explosion at the Homestake mine after two blasts failed to detonate. Investigating the cause, the blasts went off trapping the men under a mass of ore thirty six feet deep.

A mob of about seventy armed men abducted Henry Crower from Hernando Mississippi while he awaited a preliminary betrayal trial for Davie Ferguson. Crower was strung up and shot, his body hanging from a tree at the Fergusons home area. The mob acted orderly and seemed well organized.

Detroit October 6 reports from the Michigan Central Railroad show forest fires burning north of Bay City. Conductor reports mile after mile of burning woods with smoke heavy along the Straits of Mackinac and the Soo River making navigation dangerous. Rains at Ithaca cooled the danger but not extinguished the fires.
All Sides Michigan Oct 6 reports fierce fires south and east of Kingston Tuscola County with many homes burned. Every male resident fights the flames as wind shifts threaten Kingston. over a hundred men have battled since yesterday and Wilmot Village asks for aid. Dozens of farmhouses have burned across the county.
Four bodies recovered near South Indian following Ontario forest fires. Victims include Mrs. Levielle, Miss Stiles, her sister, and Levielle’s two children. Residents fled to a clearing but smoke forced them off course into flames. Casselman and Cheney suffer near total destruction.
Reports from the Canadian border say forest and prairie fires are spreading toward populated areas. Ten people are dead, and thousands of dollars of timber, homes, and crops have been destroyed. Settlers have fought the flames for over a week near White Mouth, where a trapper was named Continued on Second Page.
