General John M. Bacon and his band of Santiago Regulars are reported wiped out after a clash with Chippewa Bucks in Minnesota. The second Custer massacre story underscores a devastating defeat with few if any survivors cited.
Special dispatch from Walker Minnesota reports Bear Island battle as U S soldiers clash with Chippewa led Indians at midday. General Bacon with 100 men lands and drives Indians from brush. dozens of soldiers killed or wounded, suspected 25 Indian deaths, 2,000 more troops ordered.
A report from Lothrop Minnesota describes a clash twenty five miles north of Walker between General Bacon with eighty men and US Marshals against 150 to 200 Indians. The fight began with a blood curdling yell and a volley from the bushes wounding several soldiers and killing one or two. City Marshal Edward Harris had a broken arm and Inspector Tinker suffered leg and arm injuries. By the time of reporting five soldiers were noted as casualties.
Report from Brainerd operator claims General Bacon and soldiers were massacred by Indians at Leech Lake. The news reached St. Paul on October 6 amid rumors of the massacre.
A dispatch boat reports no visible soldiers or civilians at the battle scene after two hours of patrol. About 100 armed citizens and Brainard detachment prepare to move toward the area. O Connor, quoted via United States, says General Bacon warned a delay and tents and supplies will be needed.

Kate Larcen from Franklin County finally consented to marry John Gray on a license issued in 1891 that had remained unused for years Gray retained the license and renewed the suit, winning his bride today in Frankfort Kentucky.
Edgar Johnson, who confessed to murdering Oscar Osborne, was bound over to the grand jury and moved from City Prison to the County Jail for further proceedings.

Secretary Ryan and Captain Craig discuss the shaft conditions and disarm black labor. Coal operators announce a twenty five cent per ton price cut citing cheaper Black labor.
Crookston Minnesota October 5 367000 acres of Red Lake Reservation land opened for settlement under the Nelson act requiring five years residence and 125 per acre payment. A line formed at the Land Office with many filers staying overnight though not a rush. Land lies mainly in Lake of the Woods County and is heavily timbered. Many claimants moved in today to begin improvements and file within ninety days.
The Cuba news item outlines a likely Cuban party ticket for the Santa Cruz del Sur convention led by Maximo Gomez with Bartolomex Mazo as vice president and other ministers named. Havana will get a new municipal hospital funded with civil and church support. The Plant Line steamer Mascotte arrived from Key West with 212 aboard and delivered six bay horses for Admiral Sampson.
Marion Indiana October 5 A work train on the Chicago Indiana and Western Railway narrowly avoided wreck Wednesday morning near Fairmount as a farmer Owen Patterson denied dug a trench ten feet wide and five deep under the track. Patterson fled to fodder to fetch a shotgun when confronted by workers and an affidavit was filed by H E Drew superintendent of construction amid ongoing disputes with landowners over the railway project.
The administration will ask Congress to revive the grade of Admiral and promote Rear Admiral George Dewey, then commanding the Asiatic Station. Secretary Long announced the plan with the President's endorsement, aiming to honor Dewey with the senior naval rank.
