The President ordered the cruiser Brooklyn and gunboats Marietta and Machias to join the Asiatic squadron in the Philippines. Admiral Dewey urged rapid dispatch after his interview with the President. Other ships will follow, with veterans commanding the reinforcements to expedite the war’s end.
Admiral Dewey, after meeting with Secretary Long, is released from his command of the Olympia and will travel to Vermont to visit Shelburne Farms. He will attend state and Boston receptions in mid October before rejoining the Philippine Commission in Washington. The Olympia heads to Boston for repair and decommissioning.

Dayton health officials disclosed thirty three mild smallpox cases at the Children's Home on Summit Street. Five white children brought the contagion from a Baker Street residence via Associated Charities. vaccination orders were issued for schoolchildren. Eighty eight children are at the home with no new cases recently and officials expect all to recover.
President McKinley and Mrs McKinley depart Washington with the Cabinet for a half month journey to Chicago and the Northwest. They travel on a luxurious train named Campania with Atlantic Ixon Chili and Omena cars, stopping first in Baltimore for an engine change. Secretary Gage remains in the West.
London reports Chancellor Hicks Beach has sanctioned provisional war spending of £3,000,000 with parliament to vote up to £8,000,000. News cites Dr. Leyds confirming Kruger delivered an ultimatum to Britain. Cape Town authorities prepare a large force, while refugees flood Delagoa Bay and the Natal frontier Boer camp grows to about 8,000 men.

Special Dispatch reports in Massillon that a man named Roberts, linked to a prominent Utah figure, has four wives. Inspector Thomas, from Salt Lake City, says Roberts will leave soon with miners and has promised employment. Democratic Congress members are expected to seat him.
At the White House Admiral Dewey and Prof. Schurman presented a plan for local self-government in the Philippines. They urged rapid autonomy for Filipinos, revised duties for General Otis, and a separate provincial framework to be drafted for Congress early in the coming session.
In Qwingeville Kentucky on October 4 1900 Dr J W Smith was acquitted of killing Henry Craig near Carrington twenty two years earlier. The case drew statewide attention as Smith and Craig once rivaled in love for a mountaineer's daughter leading to Craig’s stabbing death. Smith later married a widow and pursued medicine after travels in Indiana and Missouri. An earlier shooting at Marshall Illinois involving Smith and Soward remains unresolved with Mrs Smith and her son indicted for attempted murder.
Rear Admiral Winfield Scott Schley was installed as Commander of the Loyal Legion at Delmonico's amid cheers. The ceremony included oath, flag presentation, and remarks praising Schley for his role at Santiago. About 300 members attended the banquet and ceremonies.
Special dispatch from Newcastle Natal reports Boers leaving Volksrust laager and advancing toward the frontier. Magistrates and municipal officers gather in Town Hall to plan defense as the situation grows critical. Women and children ordered to depart to the interior of Natal.

Louis Westerman started a fire in a haystack at the County Infirmary with his pipe and jumped in as flames spread. He perished in the blaze and about 500 dollars worth of barn and implement savings were damaged before responders stopped the fire.
Four Ohio State University students face trial for attempting to pass counterfeit money after a night out for a lark. They distributed liquor and tried to pass a dollar at several places, claiming it was a joke. The police judge may hold them for trial and expulsion is likely.
Coroner E H Parks finds the Little Miami railroad responsible for the death of Simon Neff, citing negligent engineer and fireman and the absence of a flagman at a dangerous crossing. Neff’s remains show a broken neck and spine and a crushed skull. the train was speeding at the time.
Porto October 4 reports new cases of bubonic plague and one death on Tuesday.
Washington reports the training ship Essex arrived at Algiers yesterday. The Nanshan departed Hongkong today bound for Manila.
At Grand Army Hall in Leavenworth Kansas J P Reese of the National Mine Workers Union urged miners to drive capitalists into the ocean and claimed a miner's kit requires a rifle He noted operators offered 72 cents a ton but urged holding out for 76 cents per ton
London reports a Daily Mail rumor that General Roget former sub-chief of the Fourth Bureau of the General Staff M Godfrey De Cavaignac former Minister of War and M Quesnay De Beaurepaire former President of the Civil Section of the Court of Cassation will be arrested on charges of conspir ing against the republic.
Judge Floyd Estell denied bond for Julia Morison James after she shot and killed Frank Leidenheimer at the opera house about a week ago. He ruled the murder was wilful and deliberate.
In Louisville on October 4 a federal court hearing over the Mellwood Distillery trust prompted Judge Evans to consider a receiver if security for Balke’s claimed $265,000 could not be deposited. The trust showed large whisky dispositions, including 27,741 barrels, with 7,845 barrels remaining on hand, raising questions of hypothecation and security.
Louis Seelbach of Leisy Brewing Company testifies in Cleveland and Sandusky Brewing case under Ohio antitrust law. He describes poaching saloon properties and leases to force saloonkeepers to sell only the Cleveland and Sandusky beer under threat of removal. He names sixty four saloon keepers as coerced or ousted.
Judge George K. Nash and Hon. R. E. Hill spoke at the Jones Opera House in Newark to a full house. Nash praised the Dingley tariff, cited rising railroad employment, sheep numbers, and exports, and urged farmers and workers to support Republican goals. Hill urged workingmen to unite, praise the party’s record, and counter Democratic free coinage critiques.
Oberlin M. Carter former Engineering Captain serving five year sentence for conspiracy to defraud the Government was moved from Governor's Island to the U S Circuit Court on a writ of habeas corpus. Judge Lacomb reserved ruling and ordered Carter returned to custody of Captain Roberts.
The Secretary of War directed Captain Gillette in Savannah to advertise a new harbor project after canceling Captain Carter’s contract with Atlantic Contracting. A parallel order went to Captain McKinstry for Cumberland Sound Georgia for the same reason.
Palermo and surrounding towns celebrate the eighty birthday of Signor Francisco Crispi former Premier. He has received telegrams of congratulations from King Humbert Queen Margherita and Emperor William praising his role in uniting Italian and German interests and aiding peace.
