Council debates suspending rules to pass an $81,000 resolution for sewer rights of way west of Enright Avenue Price Hill. Critics warn of overspending while the Finance Committee seeks budget revisions and department receipts for 1906.
Several dispatches printed here today reiterate that Abdul Hamid Sultan of Turkey is nearing death. Berlin sources say doctors expect no more than six months. Constantinople reports describe a cancerous growth and diplomatic misgivings about the sultan’s condition.
Rome, Oct. 1 Baron Paul von Matheis, once a private chamberlain to the Pope, was received in private audience by the Pope who created him a monsignor and appointed him a parish priest at Cincinnati saying there you will have a vast field for your energies.
In Rome on October 1 the Vatican reported the Pope defended French church state separation in response to statements by Premier Sarrien and Interior Minister Clemenceau. He said his encyclical reflected the rights of the church and the French clergy's sentiments and denied foreign influence.
The captain of the Liga reports sighting off Oporto a large steamer wreck with many floating bodies nearby. Ahead of the disaster were obtainable, and the ship arrived in Barcelona today.
Poisonous mosquitoes have appeared in Cincinnati bringing eight bite victims to a leading physician. Abscesses formed on faces from bites requiring lancing and care. Mosquitoes bred in alleys and stagnant water, old tins with refuse, and unhealthful moisture fuel outbreaks. Board of Health may investigate the nuisance.
The Ohio Governor requests the resignations of Trustees W Gregg and John Kaiser with a third, W H Williams of Columbus, expected after an inquiry into Athens State Hospital. The hospital will be reorganized with three new appointees, steward Jerry L Carpenter and storekeeper Martin to depart.
In Kerson on October 1 ninety seven peasants faced trial for devastation of M Krivosheins estate. Sixty three were imprisoned and thirty four acquitted after a four hour slaughter where Cossacks beat prisoners to death and mutilated many. The court nevertheless sentenced most defendants to prison.
Paris reports Lt. Lahm of the Sixth Cavalry won the James Gordon Bennett cup national aeronauts event amid a 15 balloon field from seven countries. Rolls may alter the result with his landing pending. Santos Dumont had a nonfatal arm injury requiring hospital treatment.
Salt Lake City dispatch reports Joseph F. Smith, president of the Mormon Church, arrested and bound over to district court on a charge of living unlawfully with five wives. The warrant, complaint, and magistrate were all handled by local church officials. He waived preliminary hearing and was released on his own recognizance.
Baron Rosen, Russian Ambassador to the United States, had a narrow escape in an automobile collision near Manchester New Hampshire on Sunday. His large touring car struck a runabout driven by Edgar S Taft of Gloucester causing damage to both vehicles but no injuries to Rosen or his party. Taft and his family were unharmed.
Caleb Powers sentenced to death for the Goebel assassination will have his case called at Georgetown Scott County tomorrow. He seeks a special term of court or bail after three prior trials ending in life terms twice and a death sentence once.
The Cuban welcome to Governor Taft and Assistant Secretary of State Bacon in Havana followed by a large university audience. Taft praised American aid to Cuba while urging continued study of self government and warned that Cuban reform must be backed by educated youth.
