Filipino envoys met General Otis and presented a letter claiming Aguinaldo as president while seeking recognition. Otis refused to recognize a civil government but would discuss with Aguinaldo as commander. The party planned another conference as crowds watched in Manila.
The Cripple Creek district reported September gold production of 1,781,000 dollars, exceeding all prior records. Since 1891 the district’s total gold output reaches 62,057,292 dollars.
London October 1. The British steamer Pembridge Captain Mortleman is presumed lost after sailing from Savannah on August 13 bound for Hamburg and having not been heard from since leaving the United States. The owners have abandoned hope for her safety.
In Havana on October 1, the son of General Sanguily and three Cu ban youths arrested for removing the Spanish flag from the Commercial Fire Brigade premises and the Spanish Clerks' Club are to be released on bail. Fire brigade witnesses could not identify the accused. the club case seems likely to be dropped as a youthful expression.
Congressman B P F Loud of California arrived on the New York from Southampton with his daughter Miss Grace Loud. He had gone abroad to study postal methods in England Germany and France and brings back information valuable to the government postal department.
Albert Meddley from Mation Indiana was found in Montpelier Ohio after being abducted by tramps. The four kidnappers slept and the boy escaped. He had been kept for reward and was in a pitiable, near starved condition.
War Department release shows Havana exports of merchandise and gold coin totaling $18,968,570 for eight months of American occupation. U.S. purchases reached $13,423,417, with Spain and France also prominent buyers. If trend continues for four more months, yearly Havana export value could exceed $29,000,000.
