New York November 2 A London dispatch reports a proclamation naming Lord Kitchener as chief of British forces in South Africa succeeding Lord Roberts. The delay in Field Marshal Roberts departure prevents public release until his return.
Justice House of Jeffersonville reports a secret marriage between William Gaul and Mary Frost from Hart County Kentucky. The couple walked 25 miles to Louisville then to Jeffersonville for the wedding, exchanging stories of kin and a one room house awaiting future growth.
Henry Pipter, linked to the first gold discovery in 1848, is reported dead in Utah aged about 70. He aided the Mormon Battalion work at Sutter's mill race and noted in his diary on January 24 18xx that some metal found in the mill race lured the claim it was gold. The six days later entry confirmed the metal’s gold nature.

The Reilly Block owned by Major E G Rathbone and the Campbell Block owned by Mrs Kate C Minor were sold in Hamilton Ohio under foreclosure. The Reilly Block, valued at 78666, fetched 57500 and the Campbell Block, valued at 66334, sold for 55500. Grace Campbell Countess Von Rittberg of Dresden is the sale recipient. The Reilly Block was Rathbone's last major holding.
The Treasury Department reversed Philadelphia officials and admitted laceworkers and their families brought by Dr. J. A. Dowie founder of Zion City Illinois to teach lacemaking in the United States. The move ends a prior ban on their entry.
