Chicago packers raise beef pork and mutton prices by a cent a pound causing panic among retailers. Estimated yearly gain for packers reaches 39 million dollars, with retail prices rising up to five cents on beef and pork, and three cents on mutton.
Detroit dispatch reports H C Smith elected from the Second District by 50 votes agreed to be baptized if Woodstock voters gave him a plurality. A Quaker by birth he faces a ceremonial immersion likely in spring as a robe is prepared and a committee notifies him.
Hartford City Indiana November 9 An Standard Oil Company order requires pumpers on leases to live on site and board with the landowner if they have no family. Married workers face tents as many leases have only one house, prompting protests and hardship for men separated from families for weeks.
In Indianapolis on November 9 supporters of Captain Harry S. New met to push his name for Secretary of War. New, a Republican National Committeeman, previously declined an offer but party leaders believe he would accept if offered. Indiana Republicans feel they deserve cabinet representation.
In Syracuse on November 9 the first public sale of a city franchise was held for a half mile branch line to the Syracuse and Oneida Electric Railroad Company. The city paid $504 for notice costs, and the bid amounted to one dollar.
Novyce Vremya reports two steamers and about twenty sailing vessels wrecked in the Black Sea during recent storms. Dozens of crewmen lost with several ships foundering with all hands.
New York reports say John D. Rockefeller increased his fortune by as much as 15 million dollars in two days after a post election surge in Wall Street. He holds about half of Consolidated Gas and significant stakes in Federal Steel and Standard Oil, driving large gains across his portfolio.
Roslyn H. Ferrell alias Roscoe H. Ferrell alias Charles R. H. Ferrell will be executed for the murder of express messenger Charles L. Lane on Friday March 1 1901. Judge Melhorn overruled a motion for a new trial and sentenced Ferrell after an 8:30 a.m. hearing. Ferrell showed calm as he faced the court. He asked for an evening newspaper after sentencing and expressed willingness to face the chair as he had faced prior trials. He will be moved to the penitentiary annex tomorrow at 10 24 a.m. by Sheriff Robinson and deputies for transport on the Ohio Central road.
In Owensboro Kentucky the case of T L Gant against former wife Mabel Davidson over custody of their infant son is partially heard in circuit court and will continue due to the defendant's sudden illness. The trial centers on claims of maternal unfitness versus rebuttals to scandalous gossip from a past divorce. The child wishes to stay with its mother as guardians recount years of separation and alternating custody.
President McKinley sent a formal acknolwedgement to William J Bryan for his congratulatory message. The despatch dated November 9 1900 from the Executive Mansion Washington expresses cordial thanks and extends good wishes. Bryan’s message reached Canton after McKinley began travel to Washington.
Harry S Tadings postmaster at Hayden Station and station agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad, was arrested in Columbus Ohio and arraigned before a U S Commissioner on charges of appropriating Government stamps and using the mails to defraud. He allegedly advertised in Cincinnati papers to sell electric belts for thirty cents but sent customers soap and valueless trinkets instead.
D C Nevin a well known attorney was found guilty by the session of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church of misusing funds while Superintendent of the Sunday school and of lying and deceit Nevin declined to appear saying the session had no authority and that the case is now with the Cleveland Presbytery He threatens sensational developments when the Presbytery hears the case

He plans to travel to Williams College Massachusetts for Thanksgiving with his family and move to Indianapolis early next year to assume office on January 8. Kern telegram congratulates him and cites a fair contest with no unpleasant incidents.

Vanderbilt offered to pay veterinary bills or replace the horse if killed and arranged care at Dr. Gill’s clinic. The fish cart owner declined compensation, seeking only another horse if needed.

Doctors Teachner Thomas and Palmer examined Richard Gardner after his electrocution at the Penitentiary Annex. They removed brain and spinal tissue for microscopic study and noted six tiny holes in the dura under the head electrode. The brain weighed about forty seven ounces with vascular ruptures causing clots in brain fissures.
The jury in Valet Mowbray's suit for 25 000 against millionaire Howard Gould could not agree and was asked to deliberate longer. Justice Geigerich ordered a sealed verdict if no decision by 5 30. Later a sealed verdict was filed claiming a verdict for the plaintiff though the amount remained undisclosed.
The Paymaster General’s annual report shows navy spending on construction and ship purchases totaling 10.659 million dollars, repairs 9.98 million, and keeping ships in commission 11.715 million, including 1.589 million for the Marine Corps. He claims derivation of Deputy State Supervisor due to a timely Executive Committee recommendation within ten days before the first Monday in August. The secretary of state ruled the recommendation was untimely, appointing Corer. the circuit court favored Woodlief, and Corer brings the case forward.
Louisville reports chairman Leslie Combs detailing post election outrages he claims manipulated returns. He cites disfranchisement of Republicans in Lawrence County, frauds in the Ninth and Third Districts, intimidation by armed Democratic inspectors, and uncounted Republican ballots in Bowling Green and other counties. He argues Goebel era frauds exceed 1899 and that Democratic boards aim to suppress Republican votes statewide.
