Colenso report warns of Boer advances near Colenso as 2,000 Boer patrols move eastward without field guns. British and Boer patrols exchange fire with one British killed and two Boer fatalities.
Special dispatch from Ladysmith reports dawn artillery silenced Boer guns and a coordinated British assault by the Lancers Hussars Natal Carabineers and Natal Border Rifles under General French. A field battery fortified a position and a forty two pound shell caused heavy Boer losses, then cavalry stormed the hill forcing a panicked retreat and leaving the camp and equipment in British hands. The victory could disrupt Orange Free State plans and reduce western resistance.
Ladysmith dispatch reports Boer forces routed at Bester's Hill with heavy losses. The entire Boer camp captured as artillery duel rages and a British shell destroys a Boer forty pounder.
Firing is heavy at Ladysmith as Boer forces shell the town from Grobler's Kloof Hill. Two trains from Ladysmith were fired on near Pieter's Station but escaped serious danger. Nordenfelt quick-firers and Mausers are in use. Boers shell Colenso and Fort Wylie, but shots fall short.

Seymour Ind Nov 5 Charles Nichols tried to kill Luna Carpenter at her parents home near Uniontown eight miles southeast of the city after their engagement ended. He fired a shot through a window and escaped on a stolen horse before officers nabbed him near Cana Jennings County.
The transport Ohio reached San Francisco from Manila via Guam and Honolulu carrying three officers and forty nine Nevada cavalry and two hundred fifteen discharged soldiers. Two men died during the voyage John Mauk of the First Colorado and Private F Cullom of the Fourteenth Infantry. Correspondent E C Ross of Leslie's Weekly said he did not understand attacks on General Otis and noted quiet conditions at Guam.

A special report from Cheveau County, Montana, states State Senator Phillips and Deputy Sheriff Green were arrested on sheep stealing charges. They allegedly fled with 1,737 sheep owned by Taylor Brothers and others. both were held on $2,000 bonds at preliminary examination.
Baltimore Cardinal Gibbons leaves for New Orleans to perform the marriage of his niece Miss Katie Gibbons. He travels with Fathers Boland and Rardon and will be joined by Bishop John Foley of Detroit en route. The Cardinal will be hosted by his brother in New Orleans during the visit.

Government dispatches report General Durand defeated at Huanuco 180 miles northeast of Lima. Insurgents suffer heavy casualties and loss of arms and horses while many prisoners are taken. Durand and his brothers escape, but the revolt is deemed crushed.
In Sterling Kentucky on November 5 Bob Conley and a stranger faced trouble. Policemen James Reeves and William Calla arrived. Conley resisted surrender and stabbed Reeves in the abdomen with a dirk knife. Reeves survived the wound and Conley was arrested by Chief of Police Wilson and jailed.
