Souders wins thrilling Indianapolis Speedway Classic as storm damage and mayhem sweep Kentucky and Tennessee. Coolidge warns in Arlington address that America must prepare while ominous notes of doom and abolition fears echo, chief executive urges vigilance. Cemetery scenes reflect national anxieties.
Clouds loomed but did not dampen crowds as 65 Civil War veterans led a downtown parade. Thousandsattended related services across the county, honoring dead from Civil Spanish and World Wars at Spring Grove and other cemeteries.
A white man Ira Kennedy of Wichita and Julia Mooney Coffeyville girl who was to receive her high school diploma were jailed in Independence with bonds of 20000 each. Kennedy charged with assault and Mooney with being an accessory. Investigations continue as authorities expect more arrests amid rioting over a negro suspect held in the city jail.
Earl Kilpatrick 45, chief of rehabilitation for the American Red Cross, was killed when the seaplane UO 15 crashed in a field near Hohen forty miles south of Baton Rouge on the Memphis to New Orleans trip. Lieut. Joe Gregory, the pilot, survived. Kilpatrick led flood relief work in the Mississippi Valley and was en route to a reconstruction conference in New Orleans.
George Souders, a Purdue University student from Lafayette, wins the Indianapolis 500 in his first major event. He completes 500 miles in 5 hours 7 minutes 33 seconds at 97.54 mph, earning about 30000 dollars. Souders led all laps and plans to resume mechanical engineering studies.
One man died and eleven others were injured in nine Cincinnati area auto accidents. G A Lippert 38 of Glendale died at Bethesda Hospital after his car was struck by a Pennsylvania train at Sharon Avenue crossing. The Rev. Eligius Kunkel, 50, pastor of St. Francis Cathedral Santa Fe, died while saving a schoolgirl during a boating outing at a large reservoir. He leaped in after her as two boys watched. Both bodies were recovered. Kunkel had taught at the Franciscan Seminary in New Mexico for ten years after ordination in 1901.
London dispatch reports Capt Charles Lindbergh may sail back to the United States on the George Washington on June 2 as arrangements remain in abeyance. After a full day of engagements including a banquet at the Savoy he joked about ham sandwiches and recalled his Spirit of St. Louis voyage while plans for his return continue to be finalized.
Severe floods driven by forty year high water swept across Southeast Kentucky. Nine people are dead with unconfirmed reports of more fatalities as mountain torrents destroy homes rail lines and cut communications. Property damage is estimated near a hundred thousand dollars with towns like Fleming Neon Morehead and Roxana hard hit.

In New York on Memorial Day two black-shirted Fascisti were killed in the Bronx during a parade clash with Nationalists. A riot at Times Square followed a fight between Nationalists and Fascisti as 50 fascists were wounded and police reserves were needed. Victims were Joseph Carisi, 39, a tailor, and Nicholas Armoroso, 22, a printer, both members of the Duce Fascisti Alliance.
Five girls aged 13 to 16 at a Kennedy avenue location left clothing on a pile during a picnic. They returned to find coats, sweaters, a handbag and slippers stolen. The loss totaled about 60 dollars. Sergt. Bauer offered shoes to the girls but sizes differed, leaving the items unrecovered. Names provided include Marion Price Ruth McDavis Norma Hydbruch Margaret Streit and Gertrude Henn.

Heavy rains and hail along a 170 mile stretch from Greenville Tennessee to Gate City Virginia caused about 350000 dollars in damage and six deaths. Flooding closed rivers and creeks, flooded Greensville and Elizabethtown business districts, and halted coal mine operations in Southwest Virginia for a week due to washed railroads. Mohawk River flooding damaged homes and the Tusculum College campus. Telephone lines and railway telegraph messages struggled to provide news.
Four people seriously injured and one perhaps fatally in a tornado near Mountain View Missouri. Mr and Mrs Edward Needy brought to hospital with Mrs Needy not expected to live. Local reports note many others possibly injured.
A severe hail and wind storm east of Chillicothe on May 30 damaged about 4,000 acres of corn and wheat. Stones reached 1 to 1 3/4 inches, blowing out windows and damaging houses and barns. Total damage estimated at $50,000. area described as about one mile wide and fifteen miles long.
