Cincinnati marked Memorial Day 1917 as a nation in war, with a massive parade of over 25 000 people. The scene shifted from mourning to a clarion call to arms as citizens pledged living sacrifice.
Gaston Chevrolet and Louis Chevrolet contested the Decoration Day Sweepstakes with Louis claiming victory by about seven seconds. Louis posted a 2:26:48 for 250 miles, averaging 102.18 mph, nearing the world speedway mark of 102.5 mph at Sheepshead Bay.

The Missouri town of Mineral Point was nearly wiped out by a tornado. Seven people were killed and many injured. A relief train brought 22 injured to Desoto for care at the YMCA Emergency Hospital. The depot collapsed, wrecking the Iron Mountain complex and the new Tiff mill.
Ohio shows showers Thursday with cooler conditions in the west. Friday clouds and cooler. Tennessee and Kentucky expect showers Thursday with cooler nights in the west and Friday likely showers. A cable from Madrid to Buenos Aires dated May 30 reports a serious revolt among Spanish troops in Barcelona. No origin or nature of the uprising is given in the transmission.
London May 30 announcement reports the death of Nathaniel Newham-Davis a famed author and playwright held as a lieutenant colonel.
Havana May 30 The loss of the American schooner M. E. Eldridge of Dennis Mass and the death of its Captain George Delbat and another crew member were confirmed as eight survivors were brought in by a British schooner after drifting eighteen days in a small boat. The Eldridge left Tampa May 5 bound for Cienfuegos but sank in a hurricane three days out. Survivors said they drank shark blood to endure. The vessel was a 252 ton three masted schooner built in Portsmouth NH in 1873 and owned by Rolland B Kelly of Dennis Massachusetts.
A Vienna dispatch via Amsterdam says at the Austrian Khloyd Shipping Company annual meeting yesterday the company stated it had substantial losses. The report notes financial strains and ongoing challenges in their shipping operations.
Archbishop Henry Moeller of this city selected as Supreme Spiritual Director of the Catholic Knights of America to succeed the late Archbishop Blenk of New Orleans. The Supreme Board in New Orleans also voted to pay death benefits to younger members killed in war. The organization counts about 25 000 members and 600 branches nationwide.
Scores of young men cross the border into Mexico to dodge United States army conscription. Local federal officials report between fifty and twenty men of military age leave daily to avoid service. Border officers register departures and plan prosecutions if they return after the war. Many are said to be sons of wealthy Eastern families.
