Wellner Held on White Slavery Charge in Philadelphia
Julius Wellner, a Philadelphia piano manufacturer worth millions, was held on $1,000 bail by U S Commissioner Craig on charges of white slavery. Minnie Hahn, former owner of a Noble Street disorderly house, testified she received a mileage book from Wellner to transport herself and five inmates to Alexandria, Virginia. Five inmates were arrested as witnesses. Hahn was held on $2,000 bail. Witnesses said Wellner supplied directions and the mileage book. he claimed it was a loan. The case cites possible penalties up to 30 years and $30,000. Wellner was released on bail pending trial.
