The House approved a naval bill to raise U S strength toward a 5 5 3 ratio, authorizing eight scout cruisers six river gun boats and major reforms to six battleships at an estimated 111 million dollars. Aimed at treaty limits, the measure funds oil conversion and gun upgrades with specific costs for each item.
Daniel Pulliam a 20 year old black inmate transferred from the Ohio Penitentiary on March 11 died from a cerebral hemorrhage after leading an assault during an escape attempt. W C Rogers an institution guard remained in critical condition after a blow to the head. Five other black men including George Warfield participated in the assault that targeted guards C C Cooke who fought to keep his guns. Pulliam had been jailed in Cleveland for robbery.
Explosions and fires tore through the outskirts of Bucharest destroying an arsenal and ammunition dumps. The blaze caused immense damage and a high death toll is reported. The Cotroceni royal palace was threatened as the fire continued tonight.
Grand Rapids May 28 The 136th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church voted 504 to 311 to reject reviewing the Fosdick case and urged him to join the Presbyterian Church or stop preaching in Presbyterian pulpits. The assembly also defeated the Philadelphia overture and replaced liberal leader Dr Merrill with fundamentalist Dr John F Carson as Foreign Missions head. Columbus was chosen for next year’s General Assembly.
Cecil Falk age 14 from Covington was critically wounded yesterday when a loaded revolver slipped by him while he sat roadside to clean it. He had left home without consent to hunt south of the city and was aided by William Smith 18 of Independence.
A tornado ripped through Wetumka Oklahoma leaving eight dead and many injured. Emergency hospitals opened at local facilities as the storm cut a six block by one block path through the residential district. Damages estimated at about 100000 dollars.
A lone white bandit boarded an eastbound Columbus, Newark & Zanesville car near Hibernia and held up eight passengers and the crew. He looted about 250 dollars, then fled by car, later holding up a Hibernia grocery store. Police and residents pursued, with reports the bandit was surrounded near Hibernia.
Midshipman Leicester R. Smith of Kent Ohio is killed after being thrown overboard during the Naval Academy frolic when a boat mast likely struck him as he surfaced. A board of officers is named to investigate the incident as accidental.
Crowds flocked to Loveland Park on the Little Miami River as The Commercial Tribune sold hundreds of lots for a summer colony. Many prime sites remain with slopes overlooking the valley and a park clubhouse to host dances and amusements. Boating and fishing may be popular if the weather cooperates, and picnic plans were reported for Memorial Day. Dentist Warren M. Clawson predicted lot values could hit $200 within two years.
