The Ballinger investigation closes amid verbal fireworks as the hearings wrap up. Attorneys for Ballinger Pinchot and Glavis make final arguments while the committee prepares briefs for June 11 submission.
Eight large steamships Cedric St Paul Columbia Carambia Chicago Barbarossa Minnetonka and Deutschland departed New York with crowded cabins. Over 17 000 travelers have booked passages in June and will pay 3 000 000 for first class tickets aboard 58 ships. The travelers’ European spending is estimated at 12 000 000.

Edgar W. Jones a 21 year old riverman died after a fight on Front Street near the Silver Moon. Olie Grison or Gleason 23 was stabbed in the upper abdomen and may die. A second assailant is being hunted as witnesses place the incident in the lodging house area. Jones died at the city hospital and Grison was hospitalized. Authorities continue questioning witnesses and tracking the escapee.
Reports of nine wounded African Americans near Calhoun Louisiana circulated from Monroe May 28 as deputies rushed to the scene. A previously advertised peace festival erupted when two participants drew revolvers and a general fight followed.
Peoria Illinois May 28 Association Press reports the park board offers 500 dollars for the arrest of Benjamin Cartwright former secretary of the park board mayor of Averyville and social figure. Auditors have been reviewing the books of the former secretary prompting the reward.
In Bluefields Nicaragua on May 28 the Madriz army repulsed Gen Estrada’s forces after capturing Bluefields Bluff. The Venus signaled for aid as Gen Lara’s troops pressed an assault around Bluefields. Estrada’s side captured fifty prisoners. Lara suffered about 206 killed or wounded. Marine reinforcements were expected to enforce a US proclamation banning fighting within the city. The Dictator was released and sailed. Rama and Char remained in stalemate.
Orders from Washington direct the transport Prairie to sail at five o clock tomorrow morning from the Philadelphia navy yard for Bluefields Nicaragua. Marines will not be carried from here. a stop at Colon will gather more than 500 men.
Mrs Mae Edwards confessed to shooting Turner Hulls and William Hedrick after they crossed her land. She says Hulls threatened her with a revolver prompting her to grab a shotgun and fire. Hulls is believed fatally wounded and Edwards is jailed on a charge of attempted murder.

Attorney John F. Wilson of Columbus and Charles Schmittau of Toledo filed a motion in common pleas court seeking removal of the David Gould vs. Chesapeake & Ohio Hocking Valley and other railroads case. The motion rests on an affidavit of prejudice against Judge E B Kinkead.
Mr and Mrs Douglas Robinson, brother in law and sister of former President Roosevelt, arrive in San Francisco after world tour aboard the Orient on the Korea. They depart for New York with their son Monroe Robinson, saying the trip restored Mrs Robinsons health.
Springfield May 28 Fred W Potter was reappointed insurance superintendent of Illinois by Governor Deneen for a four year term. The announcement confirms Potter continues to lead the state department overseeing insurance regulation and policy administration.
A Chicago Democrat State Senator John Broderick was indicted on bribery charges after a confession by State Senator D W Holstlaw that he paid $2500 to vote for Lorimer. Indictments also cite a furniture contract graft with Senator Holstlaw and Representative Clark.
A Pittsburg dispatch reports Gee Lee known as Nigger Tom, touted as a wealthy Chinese leader, has moved to Columbus Ohio. Local Chinamen fear his presence draws scrutiny and seeks his removal after petitions to expose his criminal record. He recently left a Pennsylvania penitentiary and allegedly terrifies the Columbus Chinese community.
A clash unfolds in Columbus Ohio as On Lang Tong factions confront nonmembers. Gee Lee of Boston and other out-of-town figures stir tensions after arriving April 30. Police raid Tom Lees store on North Third Street following a tip about a possible meeting of Celestials.

Augusta chamber groups and Georgia Carolina Fair Association telegraphed Speaker Cannon condemning Democratic opposition to a $25,000 retroactive appropriation for the president’s Southern trip. They offered $5,000 to cover the deficiency, though Taft will pay about $7,000 to $8,000 himself for remaining travels.
In Washington on May 28 the House adopted amendments to the sundry civil appropriation bill proposed by Mr. Page of North Carolina. The changes lower the total appropriation for public timber protection swamp land claims and swamp land indemnity from 750000 to 600000 and reduce the office modernization funding from 500000 to 250000 with no part made immediately available.
Kate Erder testified in the Mrs. Doxey murder trial that the prisoner tried to persuade her to marry Dr. Loren B. Doxey. The witness first learned of Doxey and received a letter Mrs. Doxey sent to him in Des Moines as testimony covered Mrs. Doxey’s actions surrounding William J. Erder’s death.
Mr and Mrs W J Chalmers reached the bedside of their daughter Mrs Norman Williams Jr in Chicago after a record 184 hour journey from Carlsbad Germany They learned of her serious condition after an appendicitis operation and found her improving with a recovery expected.
