Intense heat and high humidity sweep the Midwest and South causing a surge in fatalities. Heat advisories extend into the Ohio and Mississippi valleys as hospitals report rising heat related illnesses and weather authorities urge precautions.
A heat wave draped the East with record near high temperatures and a hurricane like storm battered New York and surrounding cities. Dozens prostrated and at least two fatalities from lightning struck as winds hit eighty four miles per hour.
The Missouri State Republican convention adopted a resolution inviting Progressive supporters back, backed a plan to cut Southern states’ representation, and denounced the Democratic administration as un-American. Indiana’s James E. Watson fainted from heat during the main address but recovered to resume speaking.
A schoolboy collapsed during class and a factory girl fainted at work as Indianapolis sweltered with a government high of 88 degrees and hotter readings on the streets. At Lafayette temperatures reached 97 with 102 at street level. Both incidents were not considered serious.
May 27. Stanislaus Perchowski aged 43, mentally unbalanced by a sudden heat wave, was found dead in Cleveland. Police are investigating the death as a possible heat related incident.
President Wilson and two cabinet members joined the opening ceremony of the American University, the new National Methodist Episcopal School, on the Potomac heights. Bishops Hamilton McDowell and Cranston spoke as the Marine Band played, with thousands of educators in attendance. Wilson urged scholarship as mastery and interpretation unifying the world.
The steamer Colon from Cristobal arrived with the first through freight for the canal. It carried 21,000 sacks of sugar and was towed on barges. this marks the first cargo to pay through freight.

Mae Sullivan, claiming Arthur L. Hoe breached a marriage promise, testifies in New York Supreme Court that Hoe lavished apartments, diamonds and cars totaling thousands of dollars on her. She recounts renting a baby in 1913 and the Riverside Drive apartment at 1000 dollars weekly as part of the alleged scheme.
Mme Schumann Heink’s husband William Rapp Jr is named co respondent in her divorce suit. Allegations describe Rapp living with Katherine Dean at multiple addresses and assisting with domestic tasks. A girl witness recalls seeing Rapp fixing a stove while wearing an apron.
A balloon believed to be from Prof Salomon Andree's 1897 North Pole expedition was reported found in eastern Siberia. Sweden ordered a government inquiry while noting prior buoy finds and unconfirmed reports of Andree or his companions.
London reports quote Prof. Percival Lowell in London receiving word from Prof. Slipher that Flagstaff spectrograms show Virgo’s nebula rotating. Prof. Fowle of Smithsonian notes nebular rotation supports La Place’s nebular theory. He explains nebulae are vast gas masses appearing as pinwheels and that rotation speeds are detectable only via spectrograms. The discovery may clarify stellar evolution and Earth’s origin. earlier Slipher data show Andromeda approaching at 200 miles per second.
The Balboa exposition commemorating the Pacific Ocean discovery by Balboa will run from November 3 to April 19, 1915, chosen to align with canal operations. Nations and leaders pledge funds for the monument, including Spain, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Panama’s President Porras, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Guatemala with diverse gifts.
A morning fire in Dayton caused about 100000 dollars in damage near Second and Third streets, canal and M streets. The Apple Electric Company bus and plant and J D Whitmore Cove n barns were destroyed along with several other small buildings.
Columbus Ohio May 27 Former Congressman Ralph D Cole stated he will not withdraw from the Republican nomination race for the United States Senate despite Warren G Harding entering the field He said assurances of support from his constituents keep him confident and that he will fight to the end He will run on his record in the Ohio General Assembly and the U S House of Representatives and form no alliances to secure nomination

Washington May 27 dispatches from General Funston at Vera Cruz show the United States determined to halt supplying arms and ammunition to the Huerta army in Mexico by Germans and others. The action reflects a clear policy to stop foreign arms shipments.
Reports from Mexico City indicate President Huerta has pledged to yield power to a commission of prominent faction leaders and to a successor chosen by that body.
