Miners Perish After Fatal Richland Mine Explosion
Chattanooga Tenn May 27 A massive blast at the Dayton Coal and Iron Company Richland mine near Dayton Tenn killed about 35 miners. Twenty two bodies were recovered by 11 pm as rescuers worked through collapsed passages and burning debris. Many victims were found near the entrance and the mine’s roof was driven in by loosened slate. The explosion may have been caused by a lighted torch despite rules against open flames. The mine has a long history with Nelson mine as a related tragedy in 189%. Rescuers will continue through the night seeking remaining victims and clearing the debris.
