In Boston on May 27 Mrs Julia Ward Howe marked eighty years with family and friends present. Her son Prof Henry M Howe joined from Columbia College and Maud Howe Elliott remains in Rome. She praised the Czar's manifesto as stirring and hoped for results, though unclear soon, and expressed gladness at the public mind's agitation about lynching in the South.
General MacArthur favors enlisting Macabebes to oppose the Tagals with arms and protection. President McKinley telegrammed Bellamy Storer United States Minister at Madrid to represent him at the Castelar funeral. Castelar’s body arrived in Madrid at 9 am with large demonstrations at stations along the Murcia to Madrid route.
Officials report a passenger train was wrecked near Canon City Texas by a water spout that undermined a culvert. One brakeman and one passenger drowned and the entire train is said to be destroyed.
The body of Colonel John M Stotsenburg of the First Nebraska lies in state tonight in the Senate Chamber at the Capitol in Lincoln Neb The body arrived from San Francisco at 9 o clock and funeral services are set for tomorrow morning at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church A military escort from the Nebraska National Guard accompanies Mrs Stotsenburg and will take the body tomorrow evening to New Albany Ind

He plans to tell audiences abroad that the current season is the most prosperous in U S history and that rail transport will be strained this summer. He also expects a quick resolution to the Philippines conflict.
A large fire in Port au Prince Haiti on May 27 destroyed twenty houses. Two firemen were wounded while fighting the blaze. The blaze caused extensive damage across the area and prompted emergency responses from local services.
Mayor Jones rejects reports of pledging to run as an independent candidate in Cincinnati. He says he only stated he would run if the time came and he believed it would not betray his duties.
A south bound freight train struck a cow about five miles north of Lima, wrecking two cars. The conductor and brakeman were badly injured and not expected to live. Henry Bunch, a Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe section hand in Alvin Texas, is jailed for 2885 after washing clothes and tending his garden on Sunday while his wife was ill. A church crowd objected to his acts, and he was found guilty by a justice and a six member jury. His wife and child were left penniless and sent to Bastrop.
In Middlesboro Kentucky Mrs Sampson died after torture by her husband. Sampson was captured by bloodhounds and jailed. His fifteen year old son Jim was arrested as an accomplice amid public indignation and talk of lynching. Police guard the prisoners. The wife, wife of a shoe maker, was beaten and tortured with a hammer and刺刺.
Detroit May 27 The Blue Ribbon trotting meet opens on Friday July 21 with the grand pacing race of the year. Star Pointer Joe Patchen John R. Gentry Searchlight and Anaconda are entered for a $2000 purse event in mile heats best two in three.
Four men forced entry into farmer Jesse Wakeman s house near Walton New York bound him after a struggle and escaped with 2500 in cash and 25000 in securities Investigators believe the suspects know the farmer and are searching the area for them.
