Credited with bold exploits in battles against the Turks, soldiers are reported to have saved lives and shown remarkable courage. Damaged dispatches describe the heavy fighting at Tsintau and the heavy losses suffered.
The American steamer Nebraskan, en route from Liverpool to Delaware Breakwater, was likely struck by a mine or torpedo forty eight miles west of Fastnet but sailed back to Liverpool. A German submarine was seen near Ireland, and gunfire and a surface contact were reported at Crookhaven as locals observed. No lives were lost among Nebraskan crew. The German submarine campaign continues with more suspected attacks and close misses.

Seventy seven passengers were saved after the Holland America liner Ryndam collided with the tramp steamer Joseph J. Cuneo off Nantucket shoals lightship. The battleships South Carolina Texas and Louisiana aided in rescue and transfer to safety. The Ryndam sustained a waterline hole and cargo loss valued around one million dollars.
Washington reports show uncertainty over whether the American steamer Nebraskan was torpedoed or struck by a mine off Ireland. Ambassador Page and Consul General Skinner relayed British Admiralty word of a torpedo hit, while the captain’s note suggests possible mine damage. Mrs. Arthur H. Noyes of Cranston Rhode Island was accidentally electrocuted today when she lifted a telephone receiver with one hand while holding an electrified vacuum cleaner in the other. A short circuit occurred in her home, causing her death.

In Atlanta on May 26 handwriting expert Albert 5. Osborn told Governor Slaton his belief that Leo M. Frank did not write the murder notes or influence James Conley. Other letters and affidavits advocate clemency as Mrs Frank plans to testify at the prison commission hearing.
Rome May 27 The King has assumed supreme command of all land and naval forces. He will go to the front permanently to fight alongside his soldiers and share in their hardships, while Victor Emmanuel seeks to reach the front in cognito, carrying on the legacy of Charles Albert and the Savoy sword until Austrian rule ends.
Sixty unemployed men drawn by Eastern ads clashed with police in Wichita Kansas. The crowd built a bonfire and cooked over it while an estimated 1600 idle men gathered in the area. They occupied freight trains in bands of fifty and refused to pay fare, intimidating housewives as authorities avoided mass arrests.
Four Civil War veterans held at the Ohio Penitentiary will be transferred to the Soldiers Home in Sandusky tomorrow with Governor Willis's approval. The inmates are Sidney J. Post from Portage County serving seven years for embezzlement, Daniel Smith from Darke County with an indeterminate sentence for cutting to wound, James Lang from Montgomery County with an indeterminate sentence for manslaughter, and Ebenezer Coates from Lawrence County serving twelve years for assault with intent to kill. One other Union veteran remains, Samuel Ferguson of Allen County, serving life for murder.
The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church approved women serving as deaconesses with equal governing power to deacons. Of 292 Presbyteries, 212 supported the change. An overture limited executive commissioners’ powers and another made a pastor moderator of the Board of Deacons. The assembly also scheduled an evening session for tomorrow.
Miss Bertha Kreider of 920 West Susquehanna avenue is under arrest on suspicion of hastening the death of her 78 year old mother Mrs Emannuel Kreider at Episcopal Hospital. A nurse found a pillow and choleroform soaked absorbent cotton over the mother's nose before Miss Kreider fled down a fire escape. Mrs Kreider died at noon. police say the suspect was reportedly insensible.
Former President William H Taft at the National Association of Manufacturers banquet criticizes the Clayton act and the FTC act as harmful to business. He denounces AFL leaders as wielding excessive power. Senator Warren G Harding of Ohio agrees that big enterprise baiting endangers American progress.
Paris May 26 The Italian government declares a blockade along the Austro Hungarian coast from the frontier to Cape Kiephali and along the Albanian coast to Cape Kiephali. The move aims to curb vessels from hidden commissariat operations with neutral powers given limited time to depart the zone. No major Austro Hungarian resistance reported as Italian forces push eastward toward the Isonzo frontier.
The sinking of the Triumph, Ocean, Irresistible, and Goliath from Britain plus the Bouvet from France leaves five allied battleships accounted for in the Dardanelles as Turkish fire, mines, or torpedoes. Additional allied battleships have been damaged and retired from the waterway.
A Turkish Aidin Reis type gunboat was sunk in the Sea of Marmara near Constantinople by a British submarine, prompting concern in the capital after Turkish transports were recently destroyed. The Athens dispatch noted the loss amid ongoing naval actions around the Dardanelles.
