A Cincinnati drunken spree ends with Governor Black ordering saloons closed but many venues staying open. Despite closures, downtown bars served soft drinks to hard drinks, depleting stocks and leaving headaches across the city. Bartenders toiled late as crowds demanded more.
A Danish ship sighted an Australian severely affected by a pump failure in the air. The flyer descended after 90 minutes aloft, having flown about 1,100 miles in a straight line. Location was lat 50 20, long 29 30, roughly 800 miles from the Irish coast.
British aviators Harry Hawker and Lieutenant Commander Menzie Grieve endured six days at sea after engine trouble forced a water landing 1,100 miles from Newfoundland. A Danish steamship Mary rescued them. they are aboard a British warship off the Orkneys en route to London where they will be celebrated.
The forecast calls for fair conditions in Ohio Monday with partly cloudy skies Tuesday and a chance of showers later. Kentucky and West Virginia expect similar patterns with local showers and little temperature change. Indiana should see partly cloudy weather Monday and Tuesday with possible showers. temperatures remain steady.
The Donaldson liner Cassandra, 5221 tons, reported to have hit an iceberg 160 miles off Cape Race. Advices state she is not seriously damaged and is entering St Johns under her own power after at sea repairs. She departed Montreal for Glasgow with 210 cabin and 127 steerage passengers plus cargo.
At a Justice for Russia meeting in Madison Square Garden 5000 people booed the names of President Wilson and premiers Lloyd George and Clemenceau. Cries of shame and murder interrupted speakers criticizing the Russian revolution and the Soviet government. Frederick C. Howe presided. Amos Pinero, Dr. Judah L. Magnes, and Rev. John Haynes Holmes spoke as booing rose on mentions of Lloyd George and Wilson.
General Jacob Coxey, resting in Washington, threatens to march an anti prohibition army on Congress. He demands immediate passage of the initiative and referendum to permit a national vote on the prohibition amendment. He vows to act within two weeks, promising a procession that will “make the Army of the early nineties look like a piker.” Coxey, long associated with poverty, is described as wealthy, with New York headquarters at the Waldorf Astoria and Washington lodging at the Willard.
A large Sunday crowd at Van Cortlandt Park watched cyclist Dare Devil Max Schreyer crash into the side of a water tank after missing a leap from a 142 foot incline. He fractured his skull and broke an arm with internal injuries. his condition was listed as critical. The stunt supported Salvation Army home service fund.
Madam Walker reputedly the wealthiest Black woman in the United States died at her Irvington home. She accumulated a fortune over $1,000,000 from a hair restorer. She owned a country estate near Irvington, an additional New York house, and ran a Indianapolis factory employing 350 workers.
Two year old Betty Camnitz daughter of Clarissa Camnitz of 1040 Winfield Avenue was taken to General Hospital Sunday suffering from poisoning after swallowing two poison tablets believed to be candy.
Berlin reports the German cabinet and Count von Brockdorff Rantzau have full accord on the general outline and counter proposals for Germany the plan aims to remove contradictions in allied demands and show what Germany can do. The notice says the counter proposals will be ready early next week and published in Berlin when presented at Versailles.
In Paris on May 25 the allied powers rejected nearly all of Germany's suggestions for the Sarre Basin settlement. They accepted only a possible charge on Germany's assets to pay for Sarre mines if the plebiscite favored France, with payment by the Reparation Commission within a year if not met, under League of Nations guidance.
Clem Apke won the North Hamilton County Republican Club presidency at East View Park Reading C. after polling 325 of 570 votes. W. W. Bellew was elected Vice President, defeating five others. several directors and officers all ran on the Regular ticket.
The Fifth Ward All-Trades Republican Club held its tenth annual frolic at Mackey's Four-Mile House with over 2,500 attendees. Captain Edward Hennekes served as Officer of the Day, and speakers included Coroner A C Bauer City Treasurer Alexander Patterson Froome Morris Judge William H Lueders Judge Samuel Bell and City Auditor George Carroll. Moving pictures were recorded for display at the next meeting.
Two year old Mary Heidenreich of 265 West McMicken Avenue was struck by a streetcar at the McMicken Mohawk crossing. Police say the child ran into the tracks and suffered a crushed foot.
Washington May 25 Congress passes a bill to release funds so seven hundred thousand military family checks can be dispatched. The president plans to sign and divert temporary funds, ending a stalemate caused by last March filibusters as blame shifts between parties and the public suffers.
The sixth Mizrachi convention opens at Music Hall with prominent rabbis and leaders. It aims to establish a Jewish nation in Palestine and fund industry and education there, seeking a $1,000,000 goal with $200,000 already raised. Otis A. Glazebrook approves, Cincinnati businessmen pledge support, and plans envision Palestine becoming self sustaining.
London May 25 Hawker's wife who had been widely regarded a widow learned that he was found aboard the steamer Mary en route to Denmark She had persistent hope and a king George telegram of condolence steadied her A London home crowd gathered outside Hawker's Surbiton residence while the Daily Mail vows a $25 000 consolation prize to Hawker and Grieve for the first heavier than air Atlantic crossing attempt.
Frank McCusker a New York pilot leaped 200 feet to his death during a Cleveland air mail flight attempt to set a record. Witnesses saw smoke from the engine before he moved from his seat to the frame as the De Haviland plunged. He died en route to a hospital. McCusker 23 and formerly in the British Naval Flying Corps.
In Casablanca and Rabat Morocco pilots Roget and Coli attempted a trans Atlantic leg via Dakar to Brazil. Roget landed near Rabat with a damaged craft forcing an abandonment and return to France by steamer. The NC-4 Navy seaplane had previously covered 1950 kilometers. Roget claimed 2200 kilometers in eleven hours fifty minutes at 185 kph.
Ascension Day was celebrated by the Cincinnati three commanderies Knights Templar and by Covington Newport commanderies with services at St. Paul Cathedral. Rev. Stuart B. Purves preached the sermon as prelates assisted. procession began at Scottish Rite Cathedral and moved to St. Paul Cathedral.
Weather over Lisbon blocks the NC-4 flight to England, delaying the final leg. Northwest winds and rain squalls are forecast, with the plane anchored inside the breakwater and guarded by a steam launch and searchlights at Ponta Delgada.
A two year old boy Fred Spallman Jr of Sylvan Street near Elmore died after tripping and falling down stairs yesterday afternoon. Neighbors and parents rushed to aid but he died before help arrived. Coroner A C Bauer viewed the body.
Joseph Tobiason sustained multiple injuries Sunday after a fall down stairs at 433 Main Street. Michael Voltz fell on lawn steps at 1986 South Auburn Avenue suffering a possible skull fracture. Both men remain in serious condition.
Clayton Kimman a Mt. Carmel Illinois farmer had a narrow escape yesterday when his motorcycle collided with an automobile driven by John Werstel of 2319 Gladstone Avenue on the Union levee. The motorcycle was wrecked and Kimman suffered a broken leg.
A shot fired at 517 Culvert Street led to the arrest of Alfred Fullright and his wife of Culvert Street and a man named Mike Bacariello of 2392 Concord Street. They are being held on suspicion and charges will be preferred this morning.
